Re: Name change
Man I hope not. I think the name stays cause Ole Danny Boy loves the publicity and the fact that people are still talkin about us even though we are a mediocre team. Any publicity is good publicity. The name and logo are a big part of the history of the NFL.

First of all, welcome aboard. Secondly, you are absolutely right that the name is a big part of the history of the NFL. The logo has changed a few times, so the logo is not so big a deal. However, all publicity is not good publicity. Just ask the folks who run the archdiocese of Boston about how some publicity can be "not so good"...

Re: Name change
What I meant was, Ole Danny Boy is an advertisement guy. So as long as people are talkin about the Skins he can use that as a selling tool. And thanks for the welcome.

Re: Name change
Snyder would lose tons of money on a name change, and the fan base would shrink. Some people who are barely hanging on to being fans as it is would feel a weaker allegiance to a new name. I'm not one of those people, but I know I wouldn't feel 100% the same. It would never happen.

And you would lose millions of dollars for existing merchandise already in stock.

Re: Name change
Merchandise revenue would go up, but the amount lost would upset that revenue. Money would be lost from the millions of dollars of merchandise already in stock, it would be lost from the tons of logistical matters that would go through with a name change (business that have deals with the redskins would all need to be dealt with), all the redskins stores, the stadium, and anything else that says redskins would have to be changed. On top of all that the fan base would shrink. So many fans are looking for a reason to jump ship after over a decade of losing with not much hope for the immediate future, and this might be what cuts the ties for them.

If it were to change it would have nothing to do with native Americans. Its not just offensive because its a slur, its also offensive because it is characterizing the native americans in a slanderous way (not how I see it, but some people do see it that way, and therefore it has to be taken into consideration). Changing just the name to something like Washington Warriors and keeping the logo, would not please those already offended. |
