Re: Rex Grossman Named Starting QB

Quoting from John Keim's article: Redskins notes: Shanahan's decision, injury updates | John Keim | NFL | Washington Examiner

Quote:
It’s also clear that Shanahan was fair in this competition. I’d heard all along from several league sources that he liked John Beck better entering camp. Naturally, you think he’ll then go that way. But Rex Grossman played better. Beck made some poor decisions and looked uncomfortable vs. Tampa Bay. And Grossman deserved to win. Shanahan picked the right guy. That will play well in the locker room; not that players were hoping he’d pick Grossman, but knowing that it was indeed open goes a long way.
Perhaps, Shanahan is an evil genius (stay with me on this):
(1) He knows that he has a bad situation at QB and the only way around it is to make the rest of the team pull together;
(2) He knows Beck is not the answer but also knows he is enough of an unknown that he can generate some buzz - unlike Rex who will always been seen as mediocre;
(3) Wanting to pull the team together - he creates a "competition" by putting up the facade of prefering Beck with the knowledge that it is going to be Grossman;
(4) In the end, neither really stand out but, rather than being disappointed that they are being led by a mediocre QB, the team pulls together b/c they believe Shanahan is "fair" when, in fact, he has just been manipulating them!

Muhahahahahahaaa

Haha like Herb Brooks from the Us Olympic hockey team? I could see that but I dont think he has done that. I think he tried to make the best of a not so good situation.

Re: Rex Grossman Named Starting QB

I think this is part of Shanahan setting the competitive tone for this team. Beck may have been who they wanted to start, but the competition didn't play out that way. If it has truly been one sided in practice and they gifted the starting job to a guy that didn't deserve it, that wouldn't have gone over well in the locker room. The Skins have had enough entitlement and have just started the process of clearing it out. It would have only been detrimental to their philosophy to start any player who didn't beat out the competition

I'm not happy about this...
But did they really have a choice with the options we left ourselves with?

We have a few new weapons to utilize so that's a + (Hightower,Helu,Hank)
Who knows... let's just win games. Bubble screen it to Santana, quick middles to Cooley, run a lot and let's go boys

The best thing about having Rex as a QB?...I can keep my fantasy football team name of "The Unleashed Dragons"

Re: Rex Grossman Named Starting QB

I was a little shocked when I heard the news .. I was out in the middle of Wisconsin enjoying Pearl Jam 20, the 20th anniv. of the greatest band of my era. Hell of a show, getting back to the point .... After letting the Sex Cannon news sink in, I'm actually okay with it .... I wont' lie, when he's in the game I don't feel too bad at all, and honestly I don't feel bad having Beck being our backup. I know we all drink kool aid every year but something tells me we are on to something special.

Very encouraging to hear the other guys like Rex. At the very least he seems to have the confidence of coaches and players alike.

I hope he starts "solid" and builds steadily through the season.

Re: Rex Grossman Named Starting QB

I just watched Rex's interview on the Redskins site.

I found it very impressive and I recommend people take a look at where our starting QB's head is at.

This player has matured and he's obviously quite intelligent.

I really am hopeful that this guy can take it to a very different level than what most people are expecting.

Just read it myself, I really liked what he had to say. He seems ready for the challenge.

Beck's reaction

John Beck's natural reaction? He's pissed, of course - NFL - Yahoo! Sports

Comparing Quarterbacks...The WashPost displayed this graphic Quarterback instability for the Washington Redskins - 2011-2012 Washington Redskins/NFL Preview - The Washington Post on the instability of Redskin QB's over the past twenty five years. As horrible as we thought JC to be, his ranking is interesting in comparison.
