"[C]ontrary to its original intention, coach Paterno's statue has become a source of division and an obstacle to healing in our university and beyond," University President Rodney Erickson said in a statement.

The 900-pound bronze statue, outside Beaver Stadium, will be stored in a "secure location."

"I believe that, were it to remain, the statue will be a recurring wound to the multitude of individuals across the nation and beyond who have been the victims of child abuse[.]"

Meanwhile the library will remain named after him b/c:

... and Mussolini made the trains run on time. Sorry, They just don't get it. The culture fostered by Paterno in his last couple of decades at PSU, and the abuses it clearly hid, more than counter any "positive impacts" that culture created. You don't get to claim credit for creating great citizens if it comes at the expense of intentionally covering up and enabling the torture of young children.

I cannot say enough bad things about PSU and its defenders right now.

Triponey lived it. She took the job at Penn State in 2003 and, within a year, started butting heads with Paterno over disciplining his players. The general student population had one set of rules, she said, that didn’t apply to the football team — and any attempts to challenge that were not just met with resistance, but anger.

Her e-mail exchange with former university president Graham Spanier and athletic director Tim Curley, among others, created national headlines when it was uncovered last fall.

“I must insist that the efforts to put pressure on us and try to influence our decisions related to specific cases ... simply MUST STOP,” she wrote. “The calls and pleas from coaches, board members and others when we are considering a case are indeed putting us in a position that does treat football players differently and with greater privilege ... and it appears on our end to be a deliberate effort to use the power of the football program to sway our decisions in a way that is beneficial to the football program.”

Penn State, at the time, had earned the nickname Penitentiary State for a rash of off-field problems, including a 2007 brawl at an off-campus apartment involving a half dozen players that led to serious injuries. Triponey wanted suspensions. Paterno wanted to discipline the players himself, making them clean the stadium after games. The coach got his way.

Banning assault weapons won't keep all psychos from getting them. But it will make it harder for them to get them. Don't we want to make it harder for a psycho to get an assault weapon?<br />

Also, banning assault weapons will not eliminate all of the ones in circulation. But each year into the future, as weapons degrade as all machines do, it will be harder for psychos to get their hands on them. Again, don't we want it to be difficult for psychos to get weapons?

You take A away someone will find B to get the job done. Eliminate psychopaths not guns. Also I have heard from many LEOs that the most dangerous weapon can have is a motor vehicle.

I second this. Do we really gotta be talking about assault rifles in the Penn State thread?

I for one am glad to see they removed the statue. Also according to this report there's a possibility that Penn State might not get the death penalty tomorrow.

If the report is true and the penalties given are even harsher than the death penalty, I am fine with that. I do expect to see unprecedented penalties given, since this is an unprecedented case.
