As long as Shanahan doesn't coach like Boudreau we'll be fine

Re: The "Inside Word" on the QB Search

I said it once and I will even give a link this time.... I don't think MS will throw away everything for just one player.

Shanahan mailbag: Skins a '12 contender? - NFC East Blog - ESPN

Talking about trading up to get RGIII.... edit: (Luck) but it sounds like it will cost a mint for RGIII also since other QB's have decided to stay in college.

Quote:
I followed up with a question about the reports and speculation that it could take three No. 1 picks to trade up to the No. 1 spot and take Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck and asked if he considered that realistic or sensible. He responded with a comparison to the 2002 deal in which the Oakland Raiders got two first-round picks, two second-round picks and cash from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for head coach Jon Gruden.

MS: I told Jon, 'No offense, but you're not worth that much! And don't go to the place where they're giving up the two No. 1s for you.' I mean, it just handcuffs you.

Finally, I asked if he thought his team was close enough to contending that he could afford to give away a big trove of draft picks for one player he really wanted.

MS: No. In fact that's why, when we went from 10 to 16 [in last year's draft] and we were able to get that extra second-rounder from Jacksonville, we were able to parlay that where we got [Leonard] Hankerson, we got [Roy] Helu and we got [DeJon] Gomes. So by going from 10 to 16, not only did we get Jarvis Jenkins, but we were able to get those three players. And those are three starters for us.

Re: The "Inside Word" on the QB Search

Just out of curiosity, can anyone post any numbers as to other teams that have made extreme "reaches" (in terms of picks/players traded) for Cannot Miss players...and that players subsequent success?
Because, I do not know what the answer is off hand.....

Falcons to an extent with Vick and the Giants with Manning. The only time it didn't really work is when the Jets traded for Sanchez and even then they got two pretty good playoff runs out of the guy. More times then not though teams don't pull the trigger on these trade ups, either because a team ahead of them is set on taking the guy they want or the pick is available for trade but the price is to high (either in terms of pick or contract size).

As a reminder the trades are as follows.

Quote:
Chargers get: Philip Rivers (1, 4) and Nate Kaeding (3, 65) in ’04; Shawne Merriman (1, 12) and Jerome Collins (5, 144) in ’05; Draft chart points: 3,895.2

Giants get: Eli Manning (1, 1); Draft chart points: 3,000
Cost: Two 1st, One 3rd, and a 5th round pick
Net Cost: One 1st, One 3rd, One 5th

Quote:
Falcons get: Michael Vick (1, 1); Draft chart points: 3,000

Chargers get: WR-RS Tim Dwight (veteran), LaDainian Tomlinson (1, 5) and Tay Cody (3, 67) in ’01 and Reche Caldwell (2, 48) in ’02; Draft chart points: 2,380
Cost: 1st Round Pick, Next years 3rd Round Pick, 2nd Round Pick two years from draft day, Player
Net Cost: 3rd Round Pick, 2nd Round Pick, Player

Quote:
To acquire Sanchez, the Jets traded their first- and second-round choices (17 and 52), plus three marginal players - defensive end Kenyon Coleman, quarterback Brett Ratliff and safety Abram Elam. (This means Mangini has eight former Jets on his roster.) Only
Cost: 1st and 2nd Round Pick and three players.
Net Cost: 2nd Round Pick, Three Players

Then again the Falcons may have screwed up the curve
Quote:
The Falcons really coveted a receiver in the first round because they were eager to move up from the 27th spot. It was a blockbuster deal. In exchange for getting the sixth pick, Atlanta gave the Browns five -- five! -- draft picks: their 1st- (27th overall), second- (59th) and fourth-round (124th) picks this year and their first- and fourth-round picks in 2012.
Cost: Two 1st, One 2nd, Two 4ths
Net Cost: 1st, 2nd, two 4ths.

Great research and post.. THe biggest difference in the last Falcons trade was the distance they had to move.. The Chargers/Giants deal would probably be the closest approximate cost to move to #3. The whole 'moving to #2' is a little overblown IMO because the Vikings are no risk to take RGIII.

Re: The "Inside Word" on the QB Search

I still say:

Rams get: #6 overall pick in 2012, 2013 1st round pick, 2012 and 2013 3rd pick and 2013 5th round pick. If we have to trade.

Possible. If we like RGIII enough, that's a possibility. Rams may want one of our 2nds.

Future franchise QB or not thats too much, or so I believe. I'd rather keep our picks, trade back for more picks, take a QB and WR in the first two rounds, pick up some OL, get a FS or two, and a CB. Maybe the team can make 7 picks turn into 14.

and offer whatever money to Flynn. I just don't get why people want to throw everything at a QB who has not played a down in the NFL, yet say Flynn might not work out. Flynn has been in the league, Flynn has played a few games, Flynn has showed he can make all the passes, move a team down the field, and score. Product of the system? he uses the same system we do. He's a match.

Whatever.

Aaron Rodgers, Matt Stafford, Cam Newton, et al. maybe reason enough to take the gamble? These guys that have gone in the first round have made their offenses prolific now or most likely in the near future (Cam). I think taking the gamble is better than what we have been doing the last decade in neglecting the QB position and waiting until the next year. You see that hasn't panned out too well.
