Out of curiosity (assuming this had passed) what would be the repurcussions of the following:

You have your car put in a garage, that is attached to the house. However, you leave the garage door open. (I'm assuming if it were closed they would not be allowed to break into your garage to put anything on the vehicle.) If you heard a disturbance at night, and as they were affixing you walked into the garage. Being surprised you shoot the intruder who you do not recognize.

I won't pretend to understand the laws behind trespassing, necessary force, etc. However, I know that to a certain extent people who own firearms are able to protect themselves and their property. I don't think a uniform, badge, or saying "police" would be enough for many people. It's easy to get replica uniforms, badges, and say police! I realize it's far fetched. I guess I want to know how a police officer versus a robber would be handled in this case. At night, in the dark, it would be tough to distinguish between the two.
