Re: Hall of Fame Class of 2012

What's with all of the Chris Carter hate? Am I missing something?

As for the argument against Parcells, what a bunch of crap. Namath, Stallworth and Swann being HoFers? Now that is pretty silly.

Carter isn't getting in cause apparently he was a real dick to the media people. And this is why they should never be allowed to vote on the HOF. It should be consisted of former coaches and players, who have common sense. Carter came across as a true asshole but you still can not deny that he was a great player who scored a ton of touchdowns. I was listening to Peter King last night and he said Carter and Andre Reed were canceling each other out. Huh???? Anyone who saw both guys play would know that Carter was the better player. Get rid of the media guys who vote on this stuff!

Ask Cris: Strategic move - NFL - Yahoo! Sports

Quote:
"I'm a huge Washington Redskins fan and I cannot understand why Art Monk has not been selected for the Hall of Fame. Art was the all-time leading receiver (940 receptions) at one time in his career and won a couple of Super Bowls. Michael Irvin was inducted last year. Why do you think they keep passing Art by?"

Joel Shuster
Randolph, N.J.

The No. 1 argument I hear against Monk is the lack of Pro Bowl appearances. He only made it three times. When you look at the amount of time he played – 16 years – and in his conference, he was only among the top four receivers three times, then how could he be a Hall of Famer? And keep in mind here: we're just talking about within his conference, not the whole league. And people say, if they were only going to take one receiver away from the Redskins offense, they would try to slow down Gary Clark. When you take all of that into consideration, there's a very strong case to keep him out of Canton.

Best of Mike and Mike: 8/12 - ESPN

Cris Carter's takedown of Calvin Johnson - NFC North Blog - ESPN

Quote:
"... We're trying to determine greatness and impact on the NFL game. Calvin Johnson, you don't have to double-team him to take him out of the game. Now, I made eight Pro Bowls. I made it with five different quarterbacks. They weren't always great. So I don't want to hear the excuse that I'm not playing with a great quarterback.

"Larry Fitzgerald the last couple years, he hasn't played with a great quarterback, but he still gets the numbers. He still gets open. He still makes plays week in and week out. I don't want to hear about the quarterback situation. That's all part of the process. Now, [Calvin Johnson] is a good player. He's just not great yet."

Quite simply put. He's a idiot and a hater.

Agreed. But that has nothing to do with what he did on the field.

The question was why did people hate on him. (especially skins fans)

Simple answer - Carter was a hater on Monk getting in. Carter was perhaps the best sideline receiver of all time, but he never had the speed to stretch the field. He also benefitted by a huge number of short TDs (under 10 yards) that Skins receivers rarely got because of the Hogs and a stellar red zone running game. When I hear Carter bash the likes of Larry Fitzgerald and Calvin Johnson, I just laugh, because he was never as impactful as they are. I challenge anyone to find a clip of Carter taking a 5 yard hitch, and turning it into a 70 yard TD with his speed. He was a great posession receiver, and great on end zone fades, but was not a guy that you had to gameplan against like a Randy Moss, Fitz, or CJ.

Who cares if he caught short TD's? Carter has something like 130 TD's and 13,000 plus yards. He's in real select company. Just cause he's an opinioned dick doesn't mean he should be kept out of the HOF. If you asked the guys that had to cover him they'd probably all say he was a truly great player.

Same could have been said for Monk, it didn't stop him from getting the screw job for 8 years.

The HOF voters can deny it all they want, but off the field stuff plays into their decision making. He'll get in eventually.

Apparently I am not the only one to feel this way. Parcells was in the first cut of finalist.

Namath was the first QB to ever pass for 4,000 yards in a season made even more exceptional because he did it in a 14 game season, led a mediocre team in the greatest SB upset in history, won the AFL rookie of the year and had 21 300 yd passing games in an era when the rules where stacked against passing the ball.
