You can ASSUME but you really don't know. If you like him and the next option available is significantly worse, then it is smarter to take him now while you can and accept the criticism for taking him "too early" vs. risking losing him because you knew he would be there later.

I agree but the gambler in me says throw the dice. I think to be a truly great GM you have to peek in your shorts on draft day to see if you have a pair.

Lol. I like taking risks too - calculated risks. The best thing about risk taking is that sometimes you win. The bad thing is that sometimes you lose. If you lose, what is the consequence of losing? If the consequence is too high, then you had better not go "all in" especially if the wife and kids depend on that cash. I do however think that it is a flaw not to ever take calculated risks, especially if you can live with the consequence of losing. I am assuming that the possibility of him not being there later was too heavy a consequence for the FO but I really don't know without being there.
