Re: Junior Seau Confirmed Dead
After 19 years of playing in the NFL, plus add a college and high school football career, I am fairly certain they are going to find brain trauma. Now is there a definitive test to prove this trauma led to his depression? Probably not. But the growing amount of similar cases is leading to a probable trend.

I don't think there's anything wrong with tossing that out there right now, considering how long he played like you said. In fact I think it would be a little naive to think it's not a strong possibility. |

This situation kind of reminds me of the tobacco and lung, throat and mouth cancer situation before it could be proved. There was no way back then to scientifically prove that a heavy smoker that died prematurely of lung cancer, died directly because he smoked two packs a day. The tobacco industry paid the $ price after it could be proved scientifically that smoking tobacco can cause cancer and lied about it or concealed the truth. Brain trauma and its direct effects are much more difficult to prove. But it does not take a rocket scientist to see former a boxers that slurs his words and suffers from other motor skill issues to know getting hit on the head repeatedly for 19+ years is not a good thing. Just like inhaling smoke is also not a great idea. It is not that difficult of an assumption to make. Science will one day catch up to this question and will either prove or disprove this theory. |

Yeah its probably fair to speculate that Seau has developed brain damage, and perhaps even CTE, from his profession and sport. But I dont think theres any proof CTE causes depression, its just a correlation. Id like to see the correlation between those who develop depression after losing unimaginable success, fame, and lifestyles. Or someone who loses an elite ability in general. I believe cricket players are supposed to have the highest rate of suicide in pro sports. Maybe thats part cultural or maybe those who experience the reverse of rags to riches coupled with a loss of importance are at a higher likelihood of developing depression once their new found role of triviality sets in. Junior Seau was a amazing player and is one of my favorite non-Redskins. Unfortunately it sounds like he had some very serious depression. Perhaps his early loss could have been prevented but it may have been inevitable.
