Of course it may not be the actual reason, because there is no definitive test or way of knowing for sure.
This situation kind of reminds me of the tobacco and lung, throat and mouth cancer situation before it could be proved.
There was no way back then to scientifically prove that a heavy smoker that died prematurely of lung cancer, died directly because he smoked two packs a day. The tobacco industry paid the $ price after it could be proved scientifically that smoking tobacco can cause cancer and lied about it or concealed the truth.
Brain trauma and its direct effects are much more difficult to prove. But it does not take a rocket scientist to see former a boxers that slurs his words and suffers from other motor skill issues to know getting hit on the head repeatedly for 19+ years is not a good thing. Just like inhaling smoke is also not a great idea. It is not that difficult of an assumption to make. Science will one day catch up to this question and will either prove or disprove this theory.
