That's because there is a very thin crop of FA's, IMO, we don't have the draft picks to make trades (there are few player-for-player trades in the NFL these days), and (this is the good news) this year's draft is deep in the positions where we have the greatest perceived needs.

This draft looks to be deep at safety and CB and deep enough for our purposes at OT.

At safety there are numerous players who could help us soon: Kenny Vaccaro, TJ McDonald, Phillip Thomas, Duke Williams, Rambo Bacarri, DJ Swearinger, David Amerson and more. We'll get a good safety in this draft, maybe even two good safeties. Who wouldn't want a guy named Duke or a guy named Rambo at safety?

There are also a number of good prospects at CB: Desmond Trufant, Jordan Poyer, Robert Alford, Jonathan Cyprien, and others. We have a chance of getting a good CB, as well.

At OT, there are some decent prospects who we might be able to draft after Eric Fisher and Lane Johnson are gone: Xavier Nixon, Oday Aboushi, David Quessenberry, Kyle Long, and possibly others.
I think people get this cap penalty think to far. We will be able to make moves in FA. Reconstructing and cutting players can get us 2 upgrade starters in FA. Which ones I don't know. I have faith Bruce can work out ways to get 2 good players here. Especially when this FA is so deep of defensive backs. We could get a Derek Cox, Sean Smith, or Kenaan Lewis CB and Kenny Phillips, Mundy, or Patrick Chung S. Those are upgrades I can see Bruce getting.

My point is that I don't see any reason to pay more money for pedestrian FA players when we can draft players who will cost less and might develop into outstanding players. In view of the probability that we'll get back Brandon Meriweather and Tanard Jackson, none of the players you listed impresses me enough to want to see the Skins use up salary cap dollars on one of them.

I think the list of safety prospects, with comments, that 30Gut provided reinforces my belief that we should be able to draft one or two solid players at that position. I have confidence that the Skins front office will do a great job of identifying the right ones.

My 2 cents on the SAF class

Reid-FS-(reminds me of LaRon Landry but more fluid movement)
McDonald-FS-(good height, solid tackler, good range, a little stiff)
Swearinger-FS/SS-(solid all around S that played CB/SS/FS solid player)
Elam-SS/FS-(good movement, aggression, good tackler, smallish)
Phillip Thomas-(Fresno)-SS/FS (good size/speed, good production, fluid movement, question his angles/tackling)
Vaccaro-SS/FS-(great size/speed, question his angles/tackling)
Rashard Hall-FS (solid FS, good movement, did well at Shrine game, 40 time is gonna be big for him)
Duke Williams-FS (tough small school prospect with CB speed)
Tony Jefferson FS (good all around FS/NB reminds of a less physical Elam, also smallish)
Jonathan Crypein SS (physical S, reminds me of a young Meriweather)
Rambo-FS (discipline? I really like the kid but he scares me as a week 1 FS maybe he starts off at SS and as he learns the game transitions to Free)
Zeke Motta-FS/SS-(good size/speed not many cut-ups, did well at Shrine game)
JJ Wilcox- (only 1 year as S converted WR)
Robert Lester FS/SS-(steady if unspectacular FS from a pro-style program, not very aggresive/explosive on film)
Cody Davis-FS-(love this kid on film, good movement, in position, looks smallish though)
Shamarko Thomas-SS/FS (great speed 4.4 or below, really like this kid but he's short 5'9, played more like a CB then SAF)
Shawn Williams-SS-(good tackler, steady)

My rankings aren't based on where I think they'll go but on my view of their skillset with a focus on playing FS over SS

I like it but would like DJ Sweringer S over Duke and Thomas and CB Trufant over Amerson.

I don't think we're lucky enough to have Trufant fall to our 2nd round pick
I like Cyprien but I think there will be better S prospects available in the 3rd
Don't like Tyrann
I love Zaviar Gooden physical skillset I would take him in the 4th
I would take Wilcox in the 5th

Jonathan Cyprien is probably the best safety in this class.

To each there own, I still like Cyprien and I have for awhile but I have Reid, Thomas, McDonald, Elam, Swearinger, Jefferson and Duke Williams ahead him.

Cyprien is more of a SS then a FS and for me to be the top S you have to be able to play FS. Also, some of those other guys have either a size or man-to-man coverage ability advantage over Cyp.

But, I could see Cyp as a starting SS, he reminds me of a Meriweather.

I could get down with this draft
I would be happy as heck if Amerson is there in the 3rd round (steal)
(i would take someone other then Honey Badger though)
I don't think Duke makes it to the 5th round nor Vince Williams will be there in the 7th

No RB? Mike/Bobby always draft a RB somewhere

Re: 2013 NFL Draft Prospects

I think Trufant's performance this week may sneak him into the first round. We also are on the backend of each round, so that effects our picks. Thus the reason behind Tyrann in the 4th

Also I thought Don for familiarity with KC.

Trufant is a great player and when you see what he did this year, his performance is first round worthy, but if he runs a bad 40, and guys like Poyer or Alford boost up their combine more, we could be looking at a guy thats still in the 2nd or when we take him.

Watching the senior bowl I loved what I saw from:

- Larry Watford G Kentucky
- Johnathan Cyprien FS/SS FIU
- Mike Gillislie RB Florida (I liked him before this game)
- Kyle Long OG/OT Oregon
- Marquies Goodwin WR Texas
- Alford
- Ziggy Ansah OLB BYU (we're not getting him, nor Taylor)
- Kawann Short Purdue DT
- Brandon Williams DT Missouri Southern
- BW Webb CB William & Mary (why didn't I see him on defense? it was just returns)

Other quick notes:
- Pugh the tackle from Syracuse looked awful
- So did Obushyi the tackle from UVA
- Where was DJ Fluker, Leon McFadden, Webb on Defense, Alex Okafor, Sean Porter, and Jaime Collins?
- Sucks that we didn't get to see Kelce and Swope
- All the secondary guys for the most part looked good today. I think TJ McDonald is just a taller Madieu Williams. Not too sold on him.
- I don't get their being 4 UConn players at the senior bowl. None made me go "Oh he's good" now that I've said that, we're going to draft some of them.
