Re: Around the NFL Off - Season style.

Good for Joe, he won a SB for his team and deserves a contract. I guess people around here feel that a player has to win multiple SBs before they get paid? Given how quickly things can change in football (i.e. injury), I think it is smart for players to get the best deal out of an opportunity like this.

I'd expect that he'll have to restructure in two to three years, and bring down his number drastically.

Either way, he was over paid in this armchair GMs opinion.
So you would risk losing a QB that has led the team to multiple playoff appearances and just won a Super Bowl, just to say that you didn't overpay him? I'm sorry but I think Flacco had all the bargaining chips on this contract discussion.

Agreed.

No, and I didn't say that.

I said he was being overpaid. Joe will be the higest paid player in the NFL next year, and will certainly not be the best player in the NFL. Thus in my opinion he will be overpaid.

With that being said, due to the gamble the Ravens took by not locking him up prior to this, they were forced to pay him the big bucks. I agree with the move, but I think he's being overpaid.

Re: Around the NFL Off - Season style.

I can totally see Joe Flacco moving on to an Eli Manning/Tom Brady second phase of his career. Where up to this point he put up slightly above average numbers but after the Super Bowl win people almost want to say the team won it in spite of the QB. Then after they start putting up huge numbers the team has trouble winning a Super Bowl afterwards. Of course thats more Tom Brady then Eli Manning but the point remains the same.

Flacco will probably have a couple of huge years from this point on that justifies the contract but doesn't win the Super Bowl which is just as well. Only one team can win it every year and it's not always the team with the very best QB.

Just to further illustrate here's Brady's and Eli's numbers during years they won the Super Bowl.

Brady
2001 - 86.5 Rating 18 TD - 12 Int's 2,843 Yards - 15 GP
2003 - 85.0 Rating 23 TD - 12 Int's 3,620 Yards - 16 GP
2004 - 92.6 Rating 28 TD - 14 Int's 3,692 Yards - 16 GP

Eli
2008 - 73.9 Rating 23 TD - 20 Int's 3,336 Yards - 16 GP
2011 - 92.9 Rating 29 TD - 16 Int's 4,933 Yards - 16 GP

Compare that to Flacco this past year
2012 - 87.9 Rating 22 TD - 10 Ints 3,817 Yards - 16 GP

Nothing special but when they first won but after they seemed to reach another level.

Re: Around the NFL Off - Season style.

One thing I've realized about football that separates it from other sports is that while there are plenty of good predictors of future performance, past performance isn't always the strongest. If you're talking about basketball, baseball, or hockey, it almost always is. In this way, football is different.

If you put a dollar value on Flacco's first five years in the league, he'd come in right around the $40 mil range. But I think his next five should be at least double that. And then when you get in to relative value of last years of contract, this contract ends up coming out pretty equal for both sides.

Three years from now, Flacco will still be one of the top five paid quarterbacks in the league, but not by much. In performance, he'll likely be one of the top five quarterbacks in the league, but again, not by much. Given that, the valuation seems pretty spot on by both sides.

Or in short, I agree with Dirtbag.

Flacco earned the contract he got. Good for him.

Hopefully they will replace him with someone even worse. The Boys have so many problems up front on both sides of the ball, perhaps they will overlook safety.

Saw this coming. Word is Cowboys interviewed Kenny Vaccaro at the Combine and liked what they saw and heard. Rumors of course, but they might be targeting him in April.

Even if they "restructure" it's still pushing that money on down the line. Eventually, it has to show up on the books.

Here is the thing. That team's window closed with this season. Reed/Lewis gone and with their cap, I'm not seeing that team going far. What if Flacco plays well below what he's being paid? You going to sign him for more years? Nope.

Not necessarily. Flacco has only about 55 mil guaranteed IIRC, he practically makes that in his first three years, in fact I think he does. After he's received all that guaranteed money there's no money they HAVE to have on the books. Flacco will most likely re-structure at that point, getting more guaranteed money, but gain much less per year.
