Neither Thomas nor Poyer would be 2nd Round reaches. Since all three players are considered to be either 1st or 2nd Round talents by some evaluators, there probably isn't much difference between them. So I'd still take the FS Thomas or the CB Poyer instead of the SS Elam. I would personally prefer either Thomas or Poyer to Elam regardless of position.

Also, I don't believe that any team drafts BPA over need all the time, regardless of what they claim.
