Nobody was going to pony up a 2nd rounder for Smith. It was much like us giving up a 4th to the Jags for Brunell when they were going to cut him anyway. No way the 49ers keep a backup with that type of cap and salary. It wasn't a question of if they were going to cut him, but when. Andy Reid already starting his tenure out in KC as a colossal failure. One of the worst trades I've seen in quite some time.

The alternative is waiting until he gets cut, then have someone else pick him up and you are left with the bottom of the barrel in FA or the draft since no one in the draft this year is projected as a Luck or Griffen III.

HOWEVER, look what the Skins did, skipped over QB in the draft when they didn't like what they saw and waited a year. Even with Beck/Rexy suckiness. And it has paid off hasn't it???

You might want to wait until they play a few games before you call it a "colossal failure!" lol. What were the alternatives? Brady Quinn? Matt Cassell? A 2nd rounder for Smith seems about right. Yeah he was probably going to get cut but then that puts him on the open market. Smith was playing his best ball when he was benched. If Reid can tone things down in the passing game then I think it's good move for KC. If he doesn't then it's a bad trade.

Really? Smith was gonna be the most coveted free agent QB when released so this eliminates the competition. The QB crop in the draft this year is bad. Third round pick is probably a more fair value, I guess the thinking is why compete with the others when Smith is the best QB available n the draft and free agency, pay the higher price. I really dont think KC is that far away in that division, actually believe the talent in KC is better now than Philly by a good margin. Its mos def more well rounded and properly built. When you look at missing parts in KC, it was no discussion, QB by far and away is(was) their biggest problem. Id wouldnt be surprised if Reid trades back now and just acquires another pick with similar value.
