Establish veteran? If he was a established veteran, he wouldn't have lost his starting spot due to a injury. Nothing about his career screams established beyond the playoff run in 2011. In fact, the ONLY reason he's still around is due to his lofty status as the #1 pick and the amount of money they poured into him. Had he been a 6th round slot, he would have been replaced long ago.

Mind you, I don't think Smith was the sole reason for his failures. It mostly had to due with his surroundings and changing coaches every year. Still, you are expected to produce in this league. "No excuses" is the phrase I hear all too often.

As noted prior, Mark Sanchez reached the NFC championship twice. Would you give up a 2nd rounder for him?



Besides, who is really in the market for Alex Smith? Buffalo? Cardinals? Chiefs? (can't add Jets due to their salary cap) I simply don't think the demand is out there enough to warrant a 2nd rounder. Also, not many teams pursued him when he was a free agent last off-season.

Alex Smith is a lot better than Mark Sanchez. But I do agree the Chiefs gave up too much. But in the end Alex Smith is still better than what the Chiefs had at the time.

I also think Alex Smith can start. He can win you games, he played well when that 49ers defense did not play well against the Saints in the playoffs. He will bring the Chiefs 6-8 more wins just because of the division they play in and the talent on the Chiefs.

You seem stuck in 2007.

Last year his passer rating was 104.1. In 2011, it was 90.7. If you are a QB-hungry team, there are no other options out there with that kind of proven track record.

A 28 year old QB with 75 starts under his belt, the last 2 seasons with a QB rating over 90, led his team to the NFC Championship in 2011, 81-63 TD to INT ratio, who else out there that was available is any better??

He lost his job because Kap was handpicked by Harbaugh and has the higher upside. He certainly didn't lose it to performance, he was one of the highest rated QBs in the league when he got hurt.

Say what you will about Reid has a head coach, but the guy knows QBs and he knows how to coach one up. I could see Smith playing really well for him in that offense.

I'm in agreement with you on this point. I definitely could see Smith playing well in that offense. I simply think they overpaid for him when they needed it to upgrade some of that talent on the team. I think the Chiefs had the most attractive offer out there out of all the teams wanting his services.
