That said, I would have also taken a chance on Hackett for such a relatively small sum.

Re: Jerome Mathis signed
That's the only thing that makes this non-move not so painful. If Zorn didn't want him that bad, perhaps there's a very good reason why we passed on him.

I mean how much can you "know" about a guy? At some point, doesn't performance say everything that needs to be said about a guy? I guess that's my thing, it's one thing if a coach is weighing in about an unproven commodity. But Hackett has taken over games before. As long as he's not a malcontent, then go get him. Who knows, maybe he was a malcontent in Seattle. And if that's the case, good job in passing on him. Of course, at the same time, WTF are we doing passing on Hackett for being a malcontent and then turning around and signing Mathis? That makes no sense. So if you're not concerned about Mathis being trouble, you couldn't have been concerned about Hackett being trouble. You just flat out dropped the ball and didn't bring him in for a good price.

Re: Jerome Mathis signed
Yeah when I saw that I was like shoot, couldn't we have given him $1M to sign and maybe $4M to $5M over 2 years?
I would have felt pretty good about our WR situation then and we could have addressed other needs in the draft. Now it seems pretty clear that we'll use a pick on a WR at some point in the draft. |

I realize I'm oversimplifying. But passing on Hackett at that price didn't make a lot of sense. Yes he's been hurt some. But to my knowledge, he's not hurt now. He knows the offense. He's a decent size. And he cost as much as Pete Kendall. Pete Kendall, people. For a guy that has put up several 100 yard games, and if he can stay on the field, could put up a 1000 yard season. Seems we could have 3 solid WR heading into the draft. We would have gotten the perfect #2 option, allowing ARE to move into the slot. Then we could have gone for the offensive and defensive lines in the first three rounds, maybe a S, maybe a CB. We would have been better off.

Re: Jerome Mathis signed
Enough about Hackett already, he has shown up in entirely too many threads for no good reason. It's not like he's a stud or anything, he still has a TON to prove.
Let it go...and let's embrace whoever the Skins draft at WR.

Re: Jerome Mathis signed
I will say this, and I know I already promised OaklandRed that I would give him a second chance, but the fact is if the Cowboy's sign this guy, almost everyone here starts laughing and making fun of the Cowboys. I will admit that I didn't think of that on my own but given our reaction to the Cowboy's going after Pacman, I'd say it's probably a fair assumtion.

Re: Jerome Mathis signed
I thought in light of everything we've been discussing with CJ, Pacman, Henry, and now Mathis these comments by Cerrato stood out
"Instead of just adding a couple of guys this time, we need [a draft] where we're adding quantity and quality guys. We need talented guys that can initially play a role and have the potential to become starters. And the biggest thing you need is good people." washingtonpost.com

Re: Jerome Mathis signed
I'm a "character counts" kind of guy and I'm highly skeptical that Mathis will turn things around, but it sounds like there is little downside to getting the guy. If he f's up, he's gone and we'll suffer no adverse cap consequences.
