Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!
I give it a B, just for the fact that we stayed put and took Orapko. Barnes, is a good physical corner, who could possibly come in and fill Springs' spot. Everyone else is just good depth for special teams. Maybe, Marko Mitchell's signing will be a spark for the Devin, and Malcom, to get off there ass and start contributing.

I gave it a C. IMO, the Skins basically drafted 1 player.

As much as i am disappointed we didnt use our full 10 minutes on the clock and make a better effort to trade down to fill multiple needs, Orakpo was without question the best player on the board at 13. There is very little chance he will be a bust and given our lack of picks and lack of production from the 2009 draft class, its probably best we went with one sure thing. We wouldnt be having this discussion if we hadnt traded for Jason Taylor. With our 2nd round pick, we could have landed Clint Sintim, Max Unger, Phil Loadholt or even LeSean McCoy. I hope Snyders learned his lesson about trading high draft picks for aging veterans who dont fit your coaches schemes.

Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!
The one pick that really puzzles me was the kid from Nebraska. I mean the guy only played LB for one year. Maybe they're just trying to bring in people to play teams but this guy has no shot at playing LB for us. You mean to tell me there wasn't one offensive lineman there who could be developed??

Without knowing what the offers were or how those offers would have increased if we had used our full ten minutes, we have no idea what we may have "missed out" on. In the end, Orakpo was our pick and atleast one reporter/analyst (Skip Bayless) thinks Orakpo was the best player in the entire draft. I wouldnt go that far, but he was by far the best available player at 13. He's a huge upgrade over Daniels and Wynn and i'm excited to see him play.

I think that any improvement he would be to Daniels/Wynn is largely irrelevant since he won't be playing their position. Neither of those guys were ever going to play on third downs, when it is expected that Orakpo would get most of his playing time in 09. I think we worked him out at LB to see if he had any value added in addition to rush end. If we had thought of him as a LE type, there would have been no reason to try him out as an LB at workouts. It seems to take a year or so to learn how to rush the passer from the left side anyway (since the fundamentals are reversed), so I would expect Daniels to be able to pressure the QB more often from that position than Orakpo, at least in 2009.

Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!
Yeah, agreed..maybe 1 1/2.
You got to look at our draft in comparison to other teams drafts if you want to give a realistic grade. You have to be non biased. Just looking at the NFC east for comparisons sake. I'd rank them. 1. Philly: Maclin, McCoy, Harris, and then getting Ellis Hobbs from NE too 2. NYG: Nicks, Sintim (who is going to be a solid pro), Beatty (slipped out of the 1st) 3. Was: Orakpo, Barnes 4. Dal: 12 picked, maybe they'll hit w/ one but no sure things So, i don't know how you'd rate us higher than a C. When we seem to be the 3rd rated draft class in the division. We should get an incomplete. At least we got one starter. |

I'm not defending the Glenn pick as much as I am saying that the FO MAY have had some valid reasons for picking him.

Re: Grade the Redskins Draft!
Day 1 = B+ (take away points for trading 2nd round picks, but Orakpo was the best available and he fills a need.)
Day 2 = C- (failed to address the offensive line in the 5th round when some 2nd - 3rd round prospects where still available. Marko Mitchell in the 7th could be a steal) Overall = C Did well first day, but tanked on the 2nd day. FO seemed to lose focus, drafted injured players that did even show up on most draft websites, and that is never a good look. A few more cerebral picks and we'd have gotten an A easily.
