Sorry, but I have to disagree completely with your assertion here.

Safeties are the last line of defense; when/if they make a mistake, it often results in a TD for the other guys because there isn't anyone to cover for that mistake.

Having a safety that can hit hard is wonderful IF - - AND ONLY IF - - that same guy can cover WRs or TEs downfield when necessary. If he cannot and the WR is waltzing into the end zone for a TD, no one in the stadium or watching at home ought to give a flipping damn if that same safety can "knock a WR into next week."

Primary Duty for Safety: Never - - as in NEVER - - get beat deep.

Secondary duty for Safety: Be a sure tackler.

Tertiary Duty for Safety: "Intimidate" opposing pass receivers.

Well, you're right, but only insofar as FS is concerned. The Skins, along w/ a small handful of other defenses in the league, still run a scheme that truly differentiates SS from FS. Our SS would be a perfect fit for a Roy Williams type IMO.

...to the specific issue at hand I think Redskins4ever simply pointed our Laron doesn't scare anyone, which is absolutely true unless that weird pet monkey from a couple years ago is still in captivity at the Landry residence.

Not true. The Redskins play as much cover two as any team in the NFL these days.

Thank you; you are absolutely correct. The Redskins need safeties who can cover because that is how they play defense.

If you had two Sean Taylors - - or two Laron Landrys - - back there, you would see a lot of Redskins plays on ESPN's highlights AND you would also see lots of Redskins opponents catching passes and running into the end zone for TDs. Both guys hit hard; neither covered well.

I don't have tape to re-watch games since I erased them from DVR, but from watching every game at least once my take was Haslett puts a safety deep (FS) and another close to the LOS (SS) on the majority of plays. Also, this isn't as obvious watching games on television as seeing them live because all the networks zoom in to the LOS.
For instance, I was shocked at how far we kept a safety back in the Seattle game, which I watched from great seats at Centurylink. Seattle doesn't even have a great passing attack.

I do not agree with this but your statement does bring another question to mind:

Who were the geniuses out there in Ashburn who concluded that Ryan Clark was not up to the task of playing safety in the NFL?

Please note that Clark can and will hit people hard, but his BIG value is that he is a good cover guy and when he gets an angle on someone with the ball he makes the tackle.

Also on Doughty he does some good things for sure or he would not be in the NFL.

I think you bring him back, even if is it for above average safety salary but below elite.

This is an important offseason for Mike, and the redskins just don't need another hole to fill for someone who can be a difference maker and has been in the defense for a couple years.

With all the possibilites at QB, who knows what trades might happen. While the redskins might land exactly who they want at QB, it might leave them without as many picks, and those picks need to be spent on OL depth, WR playmaker, MLB (to groom from London Fletcher's departure) and so on.

No need to add Safety to the list when you have someone who is fairly solid. He might not be perfect, but there are way more important positions to upgrade.

I just dont see how we lose Landry and Upgrade the position without sacrificing money, a pick, or a move that we could be using on another position.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. LaRon Landry is not worth top dollar. He isn't Ed Reed or Troy Polomalu. He played well last year, which hasn't translated to crap this year because of injury. He need to go ahead and have the surgery and get his Achilles tendon repaired so he can be back at 100%. Mike Shanahan should sign him to a 1 year deal. In that one year deal allow Landry to play to his ability if he wants a high paying long term deal in 2013. But he has to be 100 % healthy.
