NFL | Highlights of Tagliabue's tenure as commissioner
Mon, 20 Mar 2006 19:54:48 -0800 Don Pierson, of the Chicago Tribune, reports NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue's record as commissioner will show steady growth in nearly every area of the league. Television revenue grew from $4.7 million in 1989 to $3.7 billion a year. The values of franchises have grown tenfold, with Forbes magazine valuing three teams over $1 billion. The average player salary has jumped from $317,000 in 1989 to a projected $1.9 million under the new collective bargaining agreement. The league has grown from 28 teams to 32, with the league restructuring to eight divisions. In his 17 seasons as commissioner, there have been 11 different teams to win a Super Bowl. Starting in 2005, the league adopted the Olympic testosterone-testing standard to strengthen their policy on illegal drug-testing, which includes steroids. |

Falcons | Blanks says team trying hard to land Abraham
Mon, 20 Mar 2006 21:43:02 -0800 Steve Wyche, of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank said team officials continued to work on compensation to land New York Jets franchise free agent DE John Abraham. "I know we're trying hard to satisfy all parties concerned," Blank said Monday, March 20. "I think John Abraham is satisfied, at this point. It's just a matter of us working something out with the Jets." Atlanta refuses to trade backup QB Matt Schaub or its first-round draft pick (No. 15). Any new offer could include an additional pick in this season's draft or future considerations. |

Eagles | Gaffney wanted to play with Sheppard
Tue, 21 Mar 2006 12:45:38 -0800 Philadelphia Eagles WR Jabar Gaffney said that his decision to come to the Eagles was effected by wanting to play with his cousin, CB Lito Sheppard. NFL | League could review transition-player process
Tue, 21 Mar 2006 14:17:16 -0800 The Associated Press reports Minnesota Vikings OG Steve Hutchinson and his agent, Tom Condon, might have turned the NFL's "transition tag" term into a matter to review. Hutchinson, who was the Seattle Seahawks' All-Pro transition player, officially became a Minnesota Viking on Tuesday, March 21, in a deal that could pay him $49 million over seven years, with $16 million guaranteed. However, the way in which they got there could prompt the league in to review the transition-player process after the apparent loophole that Condon used to maximize Hutchinson's worth. "I don't think it's a loophole as much as a utilization of the rules," Condon said Monday, March 20. "The rule is that anything not prohibited is allowed." rule change! |

Colts | More about Vinatieri
Tue, 21 Mar 2006 15:39:30 -0800 ESPN's Len Pasquarelli reports the Indianapolis Colts have reached an agreement in principle with free agent PK Adam Vinatieri (Patriots). Although a deal has not been finalized, it could be completed as early as Tuesday evening, March 21. Falcons | Abraham acquired in trade Tue, 21 Mar 2006 15:58:06 -0800 Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, reports the New York Jets have traded DE John Abraham to the Atlanta Falcons as part of a three-way trade between the Jets, Falcons and the Denver Broncos. If the trade is approved, then the Falcons will have traded their first-round pick, No. 15 overall, to Denver, who in turn will trade their first-round pick, No. 29 overall, and two additional picks to Atlanta. Atlanta then sends the 29th pick to the Jets for Abraham. The Jets would receive a draft pick two slots higher in the first round than the Seattle Seahawks were able to offer. crazy trade. |

Bills | Moulds granted permission to seek trade
Tue, 21 Mar 2006 16:33:34 -0800 The Associated Press reports the Buffalo Bills have granted permission to WR Eric Moulds to seek a trade. "We are shopping Eric," Moulds' personal adviser, Greg Johnson, said Tuesday, March 21. "Obviously, we would much rather have Eric released. But if we can work out a trade, we will. But if not, we're back to Square 1 and Eric won't play for the Bills. He doesn't want to play for them, and he will not play for them." Johnson said several teams already have expressed interest in Moulds since the Bills granted their permission on Friday. Johnson added that the team has set parameters on what it would seek in return in a potential trade, but did not provide details. what is it with WRs and their pissy attitudes? |
