I'm sure that Robert understands the need to fix this problem on an intellectual level. But I suspect that what he does now is deeply ingrained in him and it has only become a behavioral problem now that he is in the NFL where he is competing against better athletes than he faced in college. Nevertheless, his behavior needs to change immediately if there is to be any hope of his playing a full season.

The Redskins coaching staff has failed to communicate to Robert the importance of protecting himself. Verbal communication hasn't worked. So now I think the staff needs to address this problem by replacing his current behavior with another learned behavior. To be specific, I think they should create special drills for him to practice exactly when to get out of bounds and when and how to slide. They should make him practice this over and over and correct him whenever he fails to adequately protect himself or slide properly during a drill. This needs to be a high priority and the staff needs to keep doing these drills until his behavior changes.

I'm serious about this. It is a major issue for Robert, this team, and the franchise. The coaching staff must teach him through repetition that the time for him to get out of bounds or slide is sooner than he is currently doing it.
The coaches aren't babysitters! He's a grown ass man and a smart one. He knows what he needs to do and should take it upon himself to get down. Either he does it, or he gets hurt and misses games. That might be the only way he learns. Personally I think he's exactly like Vick. He'll never truly protect himself. It's just not in his nature slide naturally.

The coaches aren't baby sitters, but they are NFL coaches and get paid a lot of money to keep these players in line. If you don't think some of this comes back on the coaching you are wrong. There's blame to go all the way around, not just at RG's feet. The have to teach him how to play this game.

I would agree with you if we were talking about db's, or rb's, or any other position.

But there's zero chance Griffin isn't getting the full attention of Gruden, Mcvay, and other coaches on that team when appropriate.

You know... Sally Jenkins had an article about Griffin's stubbourness and said some were referring to him as uncoachable last season.

Most fans wrote it off - but maybe there's some truth to it... You can lead a horse to water...

I mentioned something along these lines a few weeks back. After one of the practices with the patriots Gruden mentioned how he would like to see RG get rid of the ball and go out of bounds more often.

When Griffin was asked about Grudens comments he said something along the lines of...it's practice so I want to continue the plays so receivers can work on scramble drills, in live games I'm going to do something different.

He needs to start listening to what these coaches have to say. He hasn't listened to much so far, and it makes me very nervous for the future. RG needs to have it pounded into his head how valuable he is to this team.

I think what needs to be done is have someone on the sideline at all practices with a whistle that blows the play dead the second he starts to run. That's the only way I see him able to break this style of play.

I really hope he learns how to play more effective throughout this year. Really need to see some vast improvement, there's no way he will last in the league very long playing like this.

Re: Gameday Thread: Browns vs. Redskins

The stat last nite showed usually preseason averages around 12-13 flags per game and it drops by 1 or 2 for the regular season. This preseason its around 19. So even with a slight drop-off it is still going to be well above past years on average.

I saw Ruhskins post a pic of this earlier. What happened on this play? It didn't look like he was hit in the above sequence.

BR nicked picked the Roberts throw. Looking at I don't know where else he good have placed it.

I was very happy, in fact kind of surprised to see 6/8 with a 14 ypa. When watching the game I felt like those numbers were 5/12. Turnovers though and recklessness obviously causes for concern.

I also didn't really like the power running game nor was I happy to see Morris not only get 11 carries but also 3 or 4 rough ones down by the Goal line. Though the announcers probably had a good point that the coaches were probably ecstatic to get a live game Goal Line situation. That play where he lost his helmet made my heart skip a beat (also you'd think there'd be a picture of it somewhere on the net).

Yeah, Rak and the gang trash-talked Johnny Foosball after running him out of bounds... basically told him he was a small fish in a big pond now, and hopefully some other things as well... and the very mature Manziel resorted to a petulant little gesture. What a class act.

Also, right before the flip, he threw another incomplete pass, after being flushed out of the pocket.

Hes not gonna slide. I think we have to all realize that Griffin is going to literally play until the wheels fall off. He has a switch that has one speed. We saw it. Preseason couldn't slow down he just was gone.

So lets just rout for him and let him play his way until that happens. That's why Kirk is there. They'll do his best to make him slide but hes not a slow Tom Brady that can slide easy. Do this for me... go JOG and then slide... now SPRINT and then slide. Youll notice a difference.

Well, I'm 66 years old with a bad back... so, NO.

But i was was young once and fast. I played baseball and I slid a lot at high speed. He can do it.

You know, RG3 wasnt getting any help from the right side of the line last night. Those f*cks were taking turns letting guys blow them up. If it wasnt Polumbus, it was Chester getting beat, if it wasnt Chester, it was Kory L getting pushed into the backfield.

In order to be a pocket passer, you need a pocket first

Good point but he still can't throw that lame duck to the sideline. He's gotta know when to take the sack.

I am shocked that somehow Tyler effing Polumbdick still has a job in the NFL. A starting job none the less.

Yeah, still think Chester is the weakest link last year in pass protect and I think it showed again last night. I was really thinking he could be a bounce back player for us. And Long last night almost got Cousins killed on one play. So we need to be better there.
