Like, didn't we all take biology in high school? Did we not pay attention? Or was my public education in the suburbs of PA just better than everyone else's? I'm trying to reconcile how anybody can not understand what an immune response, how it feels, etc. I can't wrap my head around it. I was taught these things in high school. Wasn't everybody? I just don't get it. For those who didn't pay attention, or didn't take the class, or whatever... When you get a vaccine, any vaccine, your body responds as your t cells recognize the shot as a foreign invader. Your lymphatic system (lymph nodes) beefs up production of b cells and t cells in response to the introduction of the vaccine, because your body thinks it has an invader on its hands. That response can make you feel crappy, because it's essentially your body reacting the same way as it would towards the actual illness. It causes inflammation in the lymph nodes, you get achy, the inflammation causes headaches and other aches, etc. But you're not actually infected with the virus. Your body eventually realizes that and chills out. Hence the reason why the crappy feeling only lasts 24 hours. Having been introduced to that foreign invader, your t cells retain a "memory" (really it's an organic chemical imprint) of what that foreign invader looks like, so that next time it sees it, it will destroy it on sight before the virus has a chance to replicate throughout your body, and you get seriously infected. I really don't understand why that's not well understood at this point. We should be a pretty advanced society.

Re: Coronavirus (sports edition) thread
Think of it this way. You have a german shepherd and you hate your mother in law. You get a shirt that belongs to her that she's worn, you train your german shepherd that he should attack anything that smells like that shirt.
Next time she walks through that door, he takes her down and you live a happy life. That's a vaccine. The dog is your lymphatic system, he knows how to fight he just needs to be shown who to fight, how to recognize them, and when. If he's not taught to fight her, she's just going to come into the house and be a bitch and get all up in your business. He has to know she's the enemy. The shirt that smells like your mother in law is the vaccine. It smells like her. It's enough to teach the dog who to fight. Once he knows she's a succubus, he'll kill her on sight, before she moves in and ruins your life.

I'm asthmatic and and pneumonia in two separate occasions in 2019, which left me bedridden for several weeks. So I could not risk getting COVID and did everything to avoid it when it started.

Re: Coronavirus (sports edition) thread
so, yeah back to sports??
Forgetting the "dumbs" and other name calling that seems to be ok in this thread, I want to say that regardless of how it plays out, right now the team is handling it very well. Could you imagine a BA led front office going through this. There would be rumors, innuendos, name calling - you know like the debating with enemies thread. Instead, you see the team leaders calling for clear thinking, doing the right thing, but still speaking in respectful terms of all the players and teammates. I imagine getting through this, just like getting through RR's cancer last year, will bring the team together tighter. Now, if game checks are lost that certainly would be a separate stressor, but up to this point the team reactions have been excellent. PS there are 2 other threads about Covid where everyone can go and discuss ad nauseum Covid. Can this thread not devolve please. |

Coronavirus (sports edition) thread

Felt terrible after second dose, but not NEARLY as terrible as those I know that had the virus. And I am alive. No comparison. As for name calling in this thread, well when people are risking our livelihood because of misinformation that has zero basis in fact and spreading it on the internet… talking life and death here …well name calling seems extremely insignificant in comparison. |

Re: Coronavirus (sports edition) thread
Bringing the COVID back to sports discussion (thanks CRed). I'm genuinely curious to know how is asking a player about their hamstring injury or their knee surgery, any different than asking them about about whether they've been vaccinated?
I just find it interested in a sport where news about a players health is part of the business, all of the sudden this health aspect is off limits or taboo. I guess you can say that COVID is non-football related, but it is something that could affect their playing status.

As for team response, I have a meh reaction to that. Every other team is dealing with the same thing, so in theory they're all being brought closer together too. Don't think there will be any kind of intangible or emotional factor here that contributes to our W L record, no more so than any other team has. What might play a factor is number of missed practice/training camp days. Or worse, missed games. With so many guys missing camp because of being on the COVID list, we're at a disadvantage compared to most teams, not an advantage.

As for how the team is handling it compared to the rest of the league, I stand by my statement. I have seen a few coaches outright throw players under the bus - that may play well to fans but players will remember that. RR's approach has been to focus on the team and focus on the unity of the players. I liken it to Gibbs in the strike season. And it builds esprit de corps that will play a role at the end of the season. If the team forfeits multiple games then that will change obviously, but right now RR is being a leader, and guiding not dictating the players to make their own choice and make it with team in mind. I do believe in esprit de corps as you call it, making a difference in bringing locker rooms together. But the Raiders are 95% vaccinated, just to pick one team. They could easily point to how committed their team is to setting aside personal beliefs and preferences about the vaccine, and putting the team before themselves. You could point to how that demonstrates commitment. Every team has one of these things they can point to in these COVID times.
