Re: What's In a Name?

Once upon a time I played little league baseball, I was a wee 12 years old. My coach was my best friend's father, and he had been my coach on several teams since I was seven years old. Nice enough guy, but the damn feller couldn't get my last name right. (My last name is Snyder by the way, and no I am not a billionaire and no I am not related to a billionaire and no I am in no way related to the owner of the Skins. The only thing we have in common is the same last name and a huge passion for the Skins.)
Anywho, my coach always wrote up the lineups in the scorebook, and he would post it on the fence. It never failed, but there in the 3-slot was the name Synder. SYNder, not SNYder, but SYNder. This went on for 5 years until one day I finally said, you know coach, it's been five years and you've been writing my name down as Synder (and I prounounced it SINDER for him). He says "alright then, I'll change it."

I say "thank you."

He says "Oh no, I'm not changing the spelling, I'm changing the way it's pronounced. I will call you Sinder from now on."

Doh.

So some time goes by and I get used to my new last name. There comes a time in an important tournament game when we are down by a run late in the game. He comes out of the dugout, all flustered, because our pitcher walked two guys in a row. Looks in my direction in center field, pointed to me, but can't spit my name out. And in front of all my teammates, friends, parents, and the other team, he yells Sny... Sin... Snin... SCHNEED, GET YOUR BUTT ON THE MOUND, YOU'RE PITCHING.

And there you have it. That year my jersey was #10, and the rest is history.

Re: What's In a Name?

My user name is simply my last name, but it’s pronounced Sue Mo like the Sumo wrestler.

A distant half of my family pronounces it similar to summit, which is the translation in Italian.

For those that are familiar with my website work in the past you might remember I had a site called SummoSkins. My original name was Summo’s Redskin Site, and then I thought that was too long so I tried Suumo’s Skins Site and I still didn’t like the sound of that. Then I just mashed the two together and made it SummoSkins.

When I moved the site to a new server and went to register a name I thought the SummoSkins name sounded a little self-promoting so I registered Redskins Summit.com, which as I stated earlier was the translation of my last name and kind of a cool double entendre.

Re: What's In a Name?

interestingly enough, a coworker of mine created "itvnetop" for me back in 95... it was a username for some random registration (i'd never created a username for anything before)- I was a work study student for a place called "instructional television network" ("itv") and my position was "network operator." I'm no longer a network operator and ITV has changed its name, but I was so used to the keystrokes that I just kept it the same.

my name is pretty obvious and it stands for what I have been since the age of 3 and one of my earliest memories and it stands for what I will be til my last breath.

Well shortly after graduation, I started doing drugs and drinking and never made it to college, so day in and day out I work at the Chicken of the Sea plant packing sea chickens into the little cans you eat them out of.

That name can also be used as a euphuism to fire Parcells.
