Is Brunell a good quarterback?

I can't believe we are having this conversation again. How many times did we have it during last season, and how many this offseason. In my mind Brunell should have been in the pro bowl. Vick should not have been there. The guy is a quality QB who can win games. Its been unproven if he can win the big game. I think with the talent we have around him this season it will be less pressure on him to win the game and just be one of the pieces that wins the game.

Brunell not only outplayed Vick, but Delhomme also. He and Eli should have been at the pro bowl, not Vick and Delhomme.

Brunell has great touch on those short passes that give a RB/WR/TE the ability to get YAC. (Yards after the catch) and as far as arm strength goes, take a look at some of those bombs to Moss last year and tell me what else you want! I agree with you guys, on him playing way down when injured. The coaching staff needs to do a better job of recognizing that this year if Brunell gets hurt and put in Collins or Campbell. A hurt Brunell, hurts the Skins.

I haven't read much by KC Joyner, but he seems to be able to break down football using stats really well. It's tough to translate sabremetrics to football, but if you can do so it's really helpful to look at since the game is in general so hard to figure out.

Brunell is a very accurate passer and has been his whole career. I think a lot of fans think he is close to the end in terms of what he has left physically. He's near the end of the line, but only because he will retire within the next 2 years. Most quarterbacks can play past 40 with no significant physical dropoff. I do think Brunell is starting to lose the desire to play, and has been contemplating retirement. As long as the Skins are winning, his drive and desire will not be an issue. If they are losing, it's time to move on anyway. But physically he can still run relatively well, and pass very, very well.

Forget 2004. It's over and done and there was obviously a reason that MB couldn't get anything on his passes.

I still can't believe the Jags let him go as early as they did.

Leftwich isnt worthy of being compared to Brunell. He cant even fill his shoes. Hes a shoe sniffer. Byron may not even play long enough to surpass Brunells Jax records.

One last point with the injuries. We have no idea how bad Brunell was hurt in 2004 or at the end of last year. I personally believe it was real serious, and that he tried to tough it out. I don't think it's the kind of thing that will happen again easily. MB may get dinged up a bit this year, but to affect his performance like it did last year, I just can't help but think it was probably far more serious of a knee injury than disclosed. Bruised kneecap or maybe a sprained ligament or something.

6. Mark Brunell, quarterback, Redskins
In the first half of the 2005 season, the Redskins lefty was among the NFL's more efficient quarterbacks. In the second half of the season, he was an eye sore. Brunell's play down the stretch was rather abysmal.

And the oft-injured quarterback missed a portion of mini-camp in 2006 after fracturing a finger on his throwing hand.

Washington is loaded with offensive talent after adding Brandon Lloyd and Antwaan Randle El to Santana Moss, Clinton Portis, Chris Cooley, and a sturdy starting five on the offensive line. And the most significant pickup Washington made this off-season was bringing Al Saunders on board to calls plays.

If Brunell can execute the Saunders playbook, the Redskins are a Super Bowl threat. If he can't keep himself on the field, they aren't a playoff team. (For the record, I love Jason Campbell's upside, but he might have to go through some growing pains if forced to play).

brunell is slightly above average. when he's healthy he can throw deep well (even though his arm isn't amazing), and we got a guy that's pretty good at catching deep too, so...

who the hell would take leftwich over brunell. has been injured at college, and still hasnt played a season without getting hurt. i wouldnt take rothlesberger, either. i think a good young quarterback that is a product of a system. the steelers will be interesting this year without the bus. who is going to run the ball, duce? thats funny just thinking about it

A product of what system? What is so great about the Steelers offensive system? Remember how bad Maddox and Batch were in it last year? I know he didn't have to throw the ball that much, but he still played great, especially in the playoffs. Now he's going into his third year....I would love to have Roethlisberger.

And Willie Parker is going to run the ball...he got over 1200 yards last year

Like I have said....I could have quarterbacked the 1992 squad with that awesome offensive line. The key is the line. Joe, Doug and Mark R had Super Bowl caliber offensive lines. Get Brunell some time to find the great recievers we have and we should do very well!!!

I understand the point you're trying to make, but among the QBs you mentioned, I would have to say Theismann is quite a bit higher than 'average'. Check out some stats on him here:

From 1978-1984, he was consistently ranking in the top ten for statistical categories for quarterbacks, with an effective scrambling threat to boot. In fact, he was the last scrambling QB Washington had before Brunell.

It's been such a long time since he's played, and many of the members here at the Warpath have never seen him play. Most people think of him now as an annoying broadcaster, they forget that he really was a great player.

Edit: When the history books are written, the three best quarterbacks Washington ever had will be Baugh, Jurgenson, and Theismann.
