Patten thrust back into veteran leader’s role

You could very well be right and this guy will never be healthy enough to be worth the effort, but I do believe he needs an opportunity under Saunders who seems to be able to utilize all the talent and then some that a WR may have, yes I do agree this is a show or go year, but considering the time we have put into TJ it would be foolish to dump him now before we have a chance to see how he produces for a coach like Saunders. There has to be something special about him if players like Portis are saying he's the best player in the NFL to never have seen the field, I am not a big champ fan but it has to mean something when he said Jacobs may be the toughest WR in the NFC for him to cover.

Last year our offense was top half. So with all the playing time Jacobs got, he should have shown something. I'm all for keeping the guy on the 53 man roster as the 5th WR (ahead of Thrash who also makes the team), but even if he makes it, I have a hard time seeing a situation where he is activated exception to injury. Thrash would be active every week on special teams, and the other 4 on offense. Taylor Jacobs just isn't one of the 46 most valuable players on this team, pure and simple.

jacobs hate is simply based on the fact that he's been terrible. patten has put up 800 yard seasons. and thrash is clearly the better special teamer.

since p ramsey left, has offiss found a new cause? the point about patten is well taken but i disagree. i think coach gibbs will put the best players on the field, the players who give the skins the best chance to win. if patten out performs either lloyd or randle el in pre season, i say he gets the call to start

probably, cause brady is a much better QB. that doesn't mean he'd be any good though.

Hardly better at all. He never would have seen the field for a Bill Belichick team because he's a major pussy. And I'm saying that with all seriousness. If Belichick heard Jacobs say something like "They have DBs that run a 4.3, what do you want me to do?" he'd be on the bench so fast he wouldn't know what hit him.

Jacobs doesn't have what it takes. He's completely soft.

Yes he probably would have had a few more catches but the question would it have been that many more? In three seasons o5 11 recp. 100 yards 04 16recp. 178 yards and in 03 3 recp. 37 yards. I would think just by being on the field you could catch that many passes and how many where screen type passes that are almost 100%. If it comes down to Patten or Taylor I would take the experence and the one if he stays healthy could get 30 to 40 recp. for 500 yards. Taylor has just not shown that he can or will catch that many balls.

Since Patten was hand picked by this staff, why wouldn't he get to play if he earned a spot?

If he totally outplays Lloyd or Randle El, I have no doubts he will play. But I also doubt he will outplay them.

The key word there is TOTALLY, and I agree I don't think that will happen either, but what if it's marginal? Technically he outplayed them but still gets the 4th WR slot, can he live with that? I do not believe so, it's one of the reasons he signed with us last year to get out of the shadow of the rest of NE WR's. Don't forget although things seem fine now Patten did start to fall out of favor with his complaining last season, that may or may not have significance this pre-season, regardless if he wasen't happy about how he was used last season he will have a real problem this year.

Lloyd and Randle El were brought in to play. I think Patten would be fooling himself if he thought anything different. From that sounds of that recent article, he's already accepted his role with the team, whatever it may end up being.

If he's marginally better, he doesn't bump anybody out of a starting job. He'll have to make heads turn to bump somebody.

If we run more 3 WR sets this year like it seems we will, the #4 is bound to see plenty of snaps anyway rotating in to keep guys fresh. It's not going to be like last year when we ran 2 WRs most of the time.

Like you said we'll see how it goes.
