Re: What type of offense do you like to see?
I would like to see an offense that can take what the defense gives. In addition I would like Saunders to change one of the rules he has for selecting plays. Instead of never reusing a play in 6(?) games. He should allow plays that have high probability of success to be run multiple times until the opposing team shows they can actually stop it. The Falcons have the worst run defense in the NFL. In our first two series we only called two passes. In both series our worst 3 rushes would have netted us a first down. When he started calling other stuff (passes and razzle-dazzle plays starting with the reverse in the third series) I had the feeling he was calling other types of plays because he didn't want to "overwork" that part of the playbook. So I want an offense that can exploit mismatches with the defense and that gains yardage consistently enough so that it can score (a lot of) points.

Re: What type of offense do you like to see?
Destructive run game-between the tackles more than not. Lots of running but it all sets up PA. Go for the throat. We should've stepped on Atlanta like we did the 49's last year ( no offense Rexi). Swarming defense like that of last years playoff run. Good defense WILL WIN YOU GAMES! PERIOD! Couple that with a potent offense that controls the clock and gashes defenses in both ways, air and ground.
Perfect. 08 maybe?? HTTR!!

More than anything, "smashmouth" is a mentality. It's tough guy football, it doesn't mean you can only run the ball, it's just the mentality of a tough team IMO.

Re: What type of offense do you like to see?
Actually Rob you're probably not too far off from what Al Saunders wanted to do with this offense. He wanted it to be unpredictable...hence the reason why he doesn't like to call the same play twice in on game...or heck in several games. It does make it hard for the other teams to prepare. The only problem is, our offense just wasn't to the point where it could execute every play he pulls out of his playbook. I believe the lesson to be learned is, we do have to establish an identity and this offense needs to learn what it can do best within Saunders' scheme. I think once that happens, then you can slowly work that sense of unpredictablity into the mix.

He went on to say that teams would come out and when something didn't work, they tried to switch strategies, but Gibbs was always prepared. It was almost like he could see the future and know what was coming. He argued that possibly Gibbs was getting old (I noted the complexity of modern offenses), but then he mentioned Dallas with man boobs finally starting to have some success. Finally I ended it with comparing Gibbs to Vermeil, who had success with KC, with Saunders as his OC as well. We agreed on some hope there, and both think that not building through the draft was a mistake. Hopefully we'll play our cards right for next season... I don't even remember the last Superbowl. :-( I want to still be in school for the next one (2 more years)... Crossing my fingers.

Re: What type of offense do you like to see?
True that! I haven't seen it in awhile! You're right! Al needs to give Campbell some quick outs or flanker screens to get the defense off his back, because you know they're coming after him.

Re: What type of offense do you like to see?
I love to see an offense that eats up clock and pounds away at the defense and totally has controll, if they want to pass they will pass, if the want to run they will run, reverse if needed, hell the QB could run to his own enzone tap the line and run back and still move the ball. thats the offense i like to see

I like an offense that scores more points than the defense allows.

Re: What type of offense do you like to see?
I would like to see a mis-direction, power running, play-action type of offense. An offense that could pass, run and play-action out of the same formation, so that the deffense whould have to honor all three or we could catch them out of position. Basicly, do not let our formations give away what the offense wants to do. Also, I would like to see an offense that excutes near perfection.

Re: What type of offense do you like to see?
The most important thing is to tailor your offensive approach to the strengths of your personnel. Our O line is big and strong but not that fast, ergo they are built for smashmouth ball control football, or whatever you want to call it. We saw this year what happens when you try to implement a new offensive system without custom fitting it to the personel on the field - disaster.
This was the beef I always had with Spurrier. He wanted to see if his system worked in the NFL and didn't care if had the players to execute it or not. Same thing with Saunders. Bellicheck is obviously the gold standard of coaches. What have you seen in NE is an offense that has evolved from season to season, and even from week to week. SD is an example this year of a coach changing his approach based on his roster. There are a million other examples. So what do I like to see? I agree with Spurrier. My favorite play is touchdown. |

I guess the whole moral to the story is, we need to upgrade our linemen if we want to open up the offense more. Maybe have our current linemen in on heavy jumbo.

Re: What type of offense do you like to see?
