Re: Rush Limbaugh on Grossman Bashing
I think some (white) members of the media do actually feel guilty at times when writing about players of certain races, who are generally well respected. Most respected members of the media want to avoid accustations of a race bias at ALL costs. It's a label that could kill their careers. So is it unreasonable to assume that many media members (specifically sportswriters) have a bias that favors the black athlete? As much as I hate to say it, it's just how media members "play it safe". If they don't ever write controversially of a well respected black athlete, they can't be accused of a bias and they will keep their rep out of trouble. It's still a race bias, but not one that will get them in trouble.
Conversely, I do think there is a bias against any African American who is not well respected because of conduct issues. I realize that if a white player gets into trouble, he's probably much more willing to get a (relative) pass then if a black player does. It's wrong, but we jump on them anyway.

1) No white person in the media could possibly ever write something that overrates a black athlete; that is to say that the media is free of race bias. OR 2) White journalists that do write pieces that overrate a black athlete based on their race do so because they hate white people. Maybe they are just trying to do what they think is right, albeit biasedly. I think you are taking this a bit personally. I'm just sharing some observations I've made; this isn't the word of God here. I'm really trying to offend no one here.

Re: Rush Limbaugh on Grossman Bashing
What about Michael Irvin (a member of the media) saying that Tony Romo must have some black blood in him because he is too athletic to be white? If that's not racist then I don't know what is.
I also distinctly recall statements from a few years ago about Keith Brooking and Urlacher getting more hype than they deserve just because they are white. I'm the first to admit that there is a lot of racism against blacks in the NFL in terms of GMs, coaches, and QBs. But, I also know that there is racism about white athletes. |

Re: Rush Limbaugh on Grossman Bashing
Hm I am not to sure that the media holds whites to a higher standard. That is just absurd. And Irvin is just a small percentage of the media, most people realize he is a terrible analyst and has very little credibility.
I would argue the opposite. That traditionally the QB position was viewed as a predominately white position, and I think it still has that view. I mean Doug Williams was the first black QB to win a superbowl and that wasn't too long ago. I still feel people have stereotypical view about the QB positions. I usually respect your opinion GTripp, but you can't seriously believe that if Rex Grossman was black he would get less criticism? Seriously look at his stats and his performance during the superbowl. He failed to convert on crucial downs and had some absolutely horrible throws. This is like saying if Mark Brunell was black the media wouldn't be as hard on him, which I would highly doubt. I respect how you always back up all your arguments with statistics and logic, but this one doesn't seem to have either of those...

"...they're dumping on this guy -- Rex Grossman -- for one reason, folks, and that's because he is a white quarterback."
OMG. When I read this line, I had to stop reading. Sorry, I couldn't get any further than that line. Gimme a F*cking break! Up until now I didn't have an opinion regarding Limbaugh. Now I know that he's a total moron. What a douche.

Re: Rush Limbaugh on Grossman Bashing
Biggest problem with Rush is that you can't tell when he is serious and when he is joking.

Sometimes he'll say something outrageous just because he knows they'll hear a few words and start having seizures over it. He'll say something like "bunnies should die" on purpose and when you tune into NPR or CNN, you'll hear an exasperated reporter saying "GASP! RUSH LIMBAUGH HATES RABBITS AND WANTS THEM ALL DEAD AS HEARD HERE <clip of Rush saying only "Bunnies should die" and cutting out the part where he's saying that he just wants to hear them take him seriously>. Even when he SAYS he's joking, they splice up the audio and try to use it against him and it's really pathetic....and funny. Sometimes, I think the writers and reporters who quote him don't even listen to him...they'll just get a frantic call from someone who heard half a sentence and they'll write an article or do a TV report based on what their friend or co-worker "heard" him say. :cheeky-sm |
