Re: Andre Smith..Would You Take Him At 13?

Not NO, but HELL NO! At 13 what are we looking at 10-12M guaranteed? On a guy who comes to the most important, high profile, job interview in front of the entire NFL coaches/scouts, not to mention media, out of shape and then just decides to leave and tell no one. On top of this, he was suspended from his bowl game for improper contact with an agent. Here's a quote from Smith in a USA Today article, "Smith, who also was suspended from the Sugar Bowl for improper dealings with an agent and acknowledged having weight fluctuations, said Thursday that he became a left tackle because his father told him it was the "highest-paid position."

Immature and selfish, he's not 13 yrs. old he's 21+. We can do much better at pick #13. Oher, Raji, Orakpo or trade down and let some other team shell out 8 figures to this knucklehead.

Not a chance hes only a subpar RT, If Smith is there at 13 its great, because Detroit will be salivating to trade up...Keep Dropping Mr. Smith, you could very well get us 2 additional draft picks

Re: Andre Smith..Would You Take Him At 13?

I've never heard any criticism of A. Smith's on-field performance (laziness, attitude etc). I think there's some context to be had here too... the folks on the combine probably feel pissed as hell for getting snubbed by a player, which is what this looked like to me. So when he leaves for another workout/event w/o saying much you'd probably expect folks on hand to throw him under the bus. Just my guess. Anyway to the bottom line: if we take him then i'd have to believe our guys talked w/ him about all this in some detail, maybe got Samuels to sit down w/ him and get a read on things, and then decided to pull the trigger.

I think we are dealing more with immaturity. He's a powerful kid that needs to become a man. There is no doubt he can BALL. and thats whats so inticing.

I never thought of him being here as a bonus for trade purposes, but i like the way you think.

In a Hollywood environment you could count on Buges making Smith turn around

Being that this is real life, if he is already showing signs of problems during the most sensitive period for an NFL rookie then it's most likely underlying signs of deeper issues.

It'd be like going on a first date to a nice restaurant and having your date piss themselves at the table and still thinking that they were marriage material. Andre pissed his first opportunity away and we should not take a chance on him.

Re: Andre Smith..Would You Take Him At 13?

everyone step in line to draft the next ryan leaf... or robert gallery (though gallery showed much better pre-draft).

If he's bombing that badly and has no heart, that'd be a great way to waste a 1st round pick.

If he's still there, I'd trade the pick to a loser that likes making bad decisions (thanks detroit!) and use the extra impulse value of the selection to get better picks.

- that way you can get something out of his fall without the bust risk.

Re: Andre Smith..Would You Take Him At 13?

if you trade down and see him where we might take someone else, it's an easy bite

otherwise, i'll leave it to the experts

I don't feel like being less prepared for the combine than he arguably should have been makes him a worse prospect -- I just think Oher is the third best OT in the draft (after Smith and Monroe).

I don't see the bust risk though (admittedly, I didn't see it with Gallery either). He's a three year starter who has shown questionable off-field decision making, but has no physical defects, durability concerns, or questions about his ability.

For me, it's just that I don't know how well his college-dominant skill set will translate. I feel like it might force him across the way or inside. But if I'm the Redskins, that's a small price to pay at No. 13 if he's say, the next Leonard Davis.

Re: Andre Smith..Would You Take Him At 13?

Lacks maturity, Huge ? after getting suspended from bowl game and waiting till after combine had started to cancel due to lame excuse. Throwing big money to a kid is not a good investment.

Well, he went to Alabama. We've got a pretty good veteran offensive tackle on our team who went to Alabama. If Chris Samuels isn't a tailor-made mentor for this guy, I don't know who is. I bet you a gazillion dollars Samuels would take him right under his wing and make sure he does the right things. At 13 I would be thinking hard about it.

Good point Schneed. Practically all the scouts have said this kid is ready for the NFL. If not emotionally at least physically. The biggest knocks on him have been short arms and sometimes can be leadfooted, but the guy does ball when he's on the field. He may be better suited for guard I don't know. March 11th or 12th I believe is pro day in Alabama and I think his showing there will have a big impact on how teams look at him. Should be interesting to see how he shows up. I think I'll reserve my opinion until after we see how he responds on Pro Day.
