Re: Predict the 2009 Opening Day Roster

I think they are going to use the kick off return specialist they picked up from the Canadian league. I saw his highlights, runs like sprolls or however you spell his last name. Looks pretty good. He finds good holes and makes people miss because he is really short and fast.

Justin Tryon...I was actually going to say Marques Hagans, but I can't see a roster spot opening up just for him to be a punt returner. So I'll say Tryon

I was going to say it's my favorite thread of the year, but apparently, I wasn't the first person to think that

Quarterbacks (3): Jason Campbell, Byron Leftwich, Colt Brennan

Running Backs (4): Clinton Portis, Ladell Betts, DeDe Dorsey, Rock Cartwright

Fullbacks (1): Mike Sellers

Wide Receivers (5): Santana Moss, Antwaan Randle El, Malcolm Kelly, James Thrash, Devin Thomas

Tight Ends (2): Chris Cooley, Fred Davis

Offensive Tackles (3): Chris Samuels, Stephon Heyer, Jon Jansen

Offensive Guards (5): Randy Thomas, Derrick Dockery, Pete Kendall, Chad Rinehart, Devin Clark

Centers (2): Casey Rabach, Edwin Williams

Defensive Ends (6): Andre Carter, Phillip Daniels, Renaldo Wynn, Brian Orakpo, Rob Jackson, Lorenzo Alexander

Defensive Tackles (4): Albert Haynesworth, Cornelius Griffin, Anthony Montgomery, Kedric Golston (think he could get traded still, which moves Alexander back inside)

Linebackers (6): London Fletcher, Alfred Fincher, Rocky McIntosh, HB Blades, Cody Glenn, Robert Henson

Cornerbacks (5): Carlos Rogers, DeAngelo Hall, Kevin Barnes, Fred Smoot, Justin Tryon

Safties (4): LaRon Landry, Chris Horton, Kareem Moore, Reed Doughty

Long Snappers (1): Ethan Albright

Kickers (1): Shaun Suisham

Punters (1): Hunter Smith

Practice Squad (8): Eddie Williams, Marko Mitchell, Chase Daniel, Anthony Alridge, Brian Burley, Robbie Agnone, Derek Walker, Ronnie Palmer

I also predict we sign Mike Brown, and he's a surprise cut after the preseason.

Prediction 2: If Smoot gets cut in the preseason, then Barnes is starting alongside Rogers by midseason.

My original draft had Smoot getting cut...but then a little piece of me started dying. It was like Back to the Future. I could see my face being erased from the picture, so I had to keep him

Well, I guess I'm inferring that Smoot's future is tied to Barnes' preseason performance. If he lights the world on fire in the preseason, and Tryon looks competant, I don't think they'll waste a roster spot on Smoot, rather, they'll give it to a corner who can cover kicks and punts. Plus, if he does set the world on fire in the preseason, I have enough faith in Blache that if Hall underachieves, he won't put up with his attitude.

But if the first alternative is Smoot, I think Hall has a season pass to Six Flags, if you know what I mean.

Wow, nobody else caught Leftwich as our backup QB and questioned it? How do you see that playing out?

As for my predictions:
QB-Campbell, Brennan, Daniels.. Zorn has no allegiance to Collins and would rather go with his projects
RB-Portis, Betts, Aldridge, Dorsey.. End of the line for Rock, Vinny wants explosive potential from his backups..
FB-Sellers
TE-Cooley, Davis, Yoder
WR-Moss, Thomas, Kelly, ARE, Mitchell.. Big things for Thomas this year and Kelly was flashing playmaking ability before his injuries..
OL-Samuels, Dockery, Rabach, Thomas, Heyer, Rinehart, Clark, Jansen, Mike Williams, Edwin Williams.. FO is counting on Mike Williams making the team and being a contributor..
DT-Haynesworth, Griffin, Montgomery, Golston, Alexander
DE-Carter, Orapko, Daniels, Jackson.. They didn't draft Orapko to back up the Grumpy Old Ends..
OLB-Blades, McIntosh, Wilson, Glenn, Henson.. Blades WLB, McIntosh SLB, we address this in the 1st round or FA next year..
MLB-Fletcher
CB-Hall, Rogers, Barnes, Smoot, Tryon
S-Landry, Moore, Horton, Doughty.. Moore allows Landry to move back to SS where he's most effective, Horton sees plenty of action in the Cobra alignment..
ST-H. Smith, S. Suisham, E. Albright
KR-Dorsey
PR-Dorsey

Mine would look VERY close to yours, with possibly only the inclusion of Cartwright on the roster instead of Dorsey (with Aldridge handling PRs). I am all for letting Collins go, he's part of Saunders' system, not Zorns. Brennan is our backup for the future and possibly one day, the successor to Campbell. Orakpo MUST start. I want to get ARE off punt returning duties and utilize him better on offense with gadget plays, even letting him throw a bit more often. Horton can still contribute a lot even if not starting, because Lance Moore looks like he could be a great player too. I also think that Blades can handle starting. Edwin Williams should make the team and be a very important member as Rabach's backup. Barnes should definitely be ahead of Smoot, because he'll earn it in camp. I do think we need to find a roster spot for Eddie Williams as the backup to Sellers and eventual replacement. I love Sellers, but he's getting an attitude he's never shown before and is not far from retirement.

Good job on the roster.

If Tampa releases him before camp starts, there's a mutual benefit to him coming here. This is where he wants to play. Tampa is only going to keep him if he outplays Luke McCown in pre-season (in which case, Griese would get the axe). But if he gets cut, with most backup and starter roles filled, I think he comes here. Collins, as you mention, is not a good bet at all to make this team, and having the veteran (but not that veteran) backup makes sense for us.

Re: Predict the 2009 Opening Day Roster

For what it's worth, I'm a huge Robbie Agnone fan. I don't think there's any way he makes the 53 man, but I think he could be a great intermediate safety blanket. Flacco threw to him pretty much every play in college.

Plus, he comes with that qualification that all great NFL players have: Dave Wannestedt once gave up on him.

Re: Predict the 2009 Opening Day Roster

I'm really going to watch the battle for the last WR spot. Jaison Williams, Marko Mitchell and James Thrash. Seems like the rookies are really TD machines.

The only open competitions I see are at WR, LB and (R)OL. Everything else looks set.

Here’s mine (starters in bold)

QB: Jason Campbell, Colt Brennan (that’s right I’m bumping him up to backup), Todd Collins

OL: Chris Samuels, Derrick Dockery, Casey Rabach, Randy Thomas, Jon Jansen, Edwin Williams, Stephon Heyer (both are starting by week 10), Chad Rinehart, Ruben Riley, Pete Kendall (I say he returns, just a guess)

WR: Santana Moss, Malcolm Kelly (wishful thinking perhaps), Devin Thomas, Antwaan Randle El, James Thrash (I think he stays one more year)

RB: Clinton Portis, Ladell Betts, Anthony Alridge, Rock Cartwright (CFL’s Domonique Dorsey doesn’t make the cut)

FB: Mike Sellers, Eddie Williams

TE: Chris Cooley, Fred Davis

DE: Philip Daniels, Andre Carter, Brian Orakpo, Alex Buzbee, Renaldo Wynn (Rob Jackson is a difficult last minute cut as the Redskins decide to keep Wynn)

DT: Albert Haynesworth, Cornelius Griffin, Kedric Golston, Anthony Montgomery, Lorenzo Alexander

LB: Robert Thomas, London Fletcher, Rocky McIntosh, HB Blades, Chris Wilson (Alfred Fincher is surprisingly let go)

CB: Carlos Rogers, DeAngelo Hall, Kevin Barnes, Fred Smoot, Justin Tryon

S: Kareem Moore, Laron Landry (yeah I’ve got Moore starting), Chris Horton, Reed Doughty

K: Dave Rayner (in a preseason battle, he ekes out Suisham)

P: Hunter Smith

LS: Ethan Albright

Practice Squad: Marko Mitchell, Cody Glenn, Tyson Smith, Devin Clark, D’Anthony Batiste, Robert Agnone, some other dude, one more dude
Haha, I like the Colt Brennan move, however, I think Thomas has a better shot at WR, I don't think Kelly is going to be abe to overcome his knee's (I pray to god im wrong). TE, Yoder in front of Davis because of his blocking aspect? DE, How can you go against our boy Orakpo?!? S, Horton.

Re: Predict the 2009 Opening Day Roster

Very surprised here by all those w/ Kelly ahead of Thomas on the depth chart. Kelly hasn't been able to spend any time w/ JC developing timing/chemistry. Meanwhile Thomas has supposedly gotten real serious about his job. I mean if i thought Kelly was vastly more talented than Thomas it wouldn't be such a surprise; however i think Thomas is probably the more talented player (also the more raw player w/ higher bust potential, ignoring injury risks). Anyway...I think w/o Thomas taking a pretty big leap this year and establishing himself as a legit #2 threat we're gonna struggle again, which is exactly why i think he'll come out flyin and surprise the shit outta ya'll

Agreed. Cooley's site says a lot of good things about Thomas's seriousness about his job. I think he has immense potential and a fantastic work ethic, and from the sounds of it he has a good head on his shoulders.
