Exactly. I'm not positive they like Kirk that much though.

Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread

I'd love to know the real inside scoop on the Dan deal. Like did he want RG3's babies so bad he just hates on Kirk? I mean the team is obviously on the upswing and a LOT is due to Cousins. I don't get it.

We may never know. I have speculated about it lots, and it is my belief that Cousins and specifically his success here is a constant reminder to Dan about his horrible failure with the RG3 deal.

Shanahan drafted Cousins for a reason, to have as a backup plan incase RG3 didn't work out. If you believe what Shanahan says, he had some doubt from day one. If Shanahan had stayed, he would have installed Cousins as his starter, no question.

At the end of the day, Dan's ego certainly over-rides everything else. Make no mistakes about it, he will absolutely send Cousins packing if he feels he has to in order to stay "in the right" in his mind. And in Dan's mind he will draft the next superstar QB, and get the #1 jersey sales, merchandise, etc... That's all it's ever been about with him. He wants to win, sure, as long as winning goes along with him reaching his other goals.

At this point we don't know what Snyder thinks. It's really all speculation cause he never ever talks to the media.

Redskins Audio | ESPN 980

Listen to the John Keim interview here with Steve Czaban. He touches on my earlier point about the use of the franchise tag and how thats a poor option for the Skins if they want to get a long term deal done

18 days to go. I really expect a deal done by the 26th. But if its a sweetheart of a deal they ought to wrap it up next Tuesday.

Here's a question for all you arm chair psychologists. Do you think the fact that in 2016 Cousins was still auditioning for a long term contract, it had an impact on the games where he kind of choked. And if the answer is yes, then would signing him to a long term deal have the added bonus of allowing him to settle down and relax so he can just do his job.

I'm an arm chair psycho, so I'll give it a try. Kirk hinted that not having a deal kept him from performing at his best. To me, that is simply a poor excuse. He has my permission to relax and just do his job with or without a long-term contract. WTF is he whining about when he just got paid twenty freakin' million dollars for one season's work? It's like he's saying "Poor me, I'm only set up financially for one lifetime. I'm so worried that I won't get a contract with a $40M guarantee that will set me up for three lifetimes that I can hardly focus on my job." What a crock!

If anything, that kind of attitude, or excuse, makes him look like he lacks focus and mental toughness, which would make him exactly the type of QB I wouldn't want to sign to a long-term deal. Oh, I want him to be re-signed but I also want him to act like a man and stop whining and making far-fetched excuses for his inconsistent play. If he is a true competitor, then he doesn't need tens of millions more dollars so he can relax and continue striving to get better. He'll get more big money this season regardless of what he does but he shouldn't act as if worrying about the money has anything to do with his being able to improve his performance.

I like your point.

But I also think that for the players it's not all about the money.
It's also a very emotional game.
And I can understand the need to feel support from the board, to feel legitimate not only to play your best football, but to be the leader of the team too, to feel that your work is appreciated.

The guy we saw yell "How do you like me now?!" wasn't begging for money, but for support. (Money is a way to show that you believe in somebody though.)

Now is it an excuse for inconsistent play? Absolutely not. But it has to influence the mindset of a player, his level of confidence.

After to great seasons by KC, I can picture how all the noise and uncertainty, pretty much because of one bad game, has to feel pretty unfair and cheap.

I agree with this. I know it's easy for us to sit and ask what he's whining about when he's getting paid 20 mil for a season's worth of work, but it will always be looked at differently from those inside the sport. To take less money means you will be hurting the rest of the qb fraternity when their new deals come up. And that's frowned upon. Because when it comes time for your new deal to come up, the baseline starts with the latest previous deals signed. And as the salary cap rises these deals are only going to get larger.

Nobody wrote anything in this thread about Kirk taking less money before you posted.
