Mon, 27 Mar 2006 13:24:03 -0800

Pat Yasinskas, of the Charlotte Observer, reports Carolina Panthers head coach John Fox has agreed to a five-year contract which will make him one of the NFL's highest-paid coaches, according to Panthers president Mark Richardson. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately available, but Fox should be receiving close to $5 million per season. Fox had two seasons remaining on his contract that paid him near $3 million per season. The new deal keeps him with the Panthers though 2010.

Packers | J. Walker drawing interest; Packers may not budge
Mon, 27 Mar 2006 21:14:34 -0800

Tom Silverstein, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports Green Bay Packers WR Javon Walker would like to be traded or cut, but so far the Packers have not entertained the idea of parting ways with him, in part because it would set a bad precedent for other players unhappy with their contracts and in part because his value has decreased because he's still rehabilitating from the knee injury. At least one AFC team has started doing homework on Walker, probably to see if it's worth making the Packers a trade offer, but it's unclear whether the Packers will even consider dealing him. Packers' general manager Ted Thompson didn't dispute that teams have showed interest in Walker, but he said it stemmed from the receiver's recent public comments and not the Packers shopping him.

Buccaneers | Team may sign Woodson
Mon, 27 Mar 2006 21:45:46 -0800

Katherine Smith and Roy Cummings, of the Tampa Tribune, report there is league scuttlebutt that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will wind up signing free agent CB Charles Woodson (Raiders). Should that happen, the Bucs could immediately place him at free safety, but head coach Jon Gruden said Woodson will likely play more than one position should he join the Buccaneers. "His playing status is something that will have to be determined not only on a weekly basis but sometimes on a play-by-play basis," Gruden said.

interesting... another old vet on a defense that's absolutely ancient now.

Patriots | Team not moving fast enough for Moulds
Mon, 27 Mar 2006 22:33:01 -0800

Tom E. Curran, of the Providence Journal, reports Buffalo Bills WR Eric Moulds' advisor, Gerg Johnson, said the Philadelphia Eagles and the Houston Texans are moving faster than the New England Patriots to try to land Moulds. Johnson said, "It's not going to work out [with New England]. The timing's not right. The only way it would get done now is if it falls apart with these other teams, and I don't see that happening." He believes everything will be settled in the next 48 hours.

rushing usually means overpaying, and what is it that the pats just don't do? I don't see how this makes headlines or can even be considered interesting.

Ryan O'Halloran, of the Washington Times, reports Washington Redskins RB Clinton Portis said Monday, March 27, he tried to convince RB Edgerrin James to sign with the Redskins. "I kept calling E.J. to come up here, and we would have had one of the most dangerous backfields ever," he said. "Bo Jackson and Marcus Allen co-existed. I told him to sign for less money, and he wouldn't have to do as much work. We would have run into the record books."

Broncos | Team checking into J. Walker
Tue, 28 Mar 2006 07:54:31 -0800

Jeff Legwold, of the Rocky Mountain News, reports two league sources said Monday, March 27, that Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan has made informal inquiries about Green Bay Packers WR Javon Walker. Those discussions have included former Packers head coach Mike Sherman, who is now on the Houston Texans staff. Walker, who publicly has threatened to retire instead of play for the Packers again, is under contract to Green Bay for the 2006 season. Packers general manager Ted Thompson said he has "received inquiries" about Walker and would listen to any proposed deals. The Packers have not publicly given Walker permission to seek a trade on his own.

Giants | E. Manning will not work out in Florida
Tue, 28 Mar 2006 18:49:31 -0800

David Porter, of the Associated Pres reports New York Giants QB Eli Manning said he has no plans to go to Florida to throw with TE Jeremy Shockey or WR Plaxico Burress, both of whom are or will be working out at the University of Miami instead of with the team. "I need to be here," he said. "This is where everything is. Hopefully we can get them up here if it works out, to find time and throw a little."

Steelers | Cowher concerned with team chemistry
Wed, 29 Mar 2006 11:43:49 -0800

The Associated Press reports Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher said he is concerned about his team's chemistry heading into 2006 after losing RB Jerome Bettis to retirement and WR Antwaan Randle El, S Chris Hope and DL Kimo von Oelhoffen to free agency. "I'm very much concerned with the loss of leadership," said Cowher. "Not just what they brought on the field, but off it in their own ways. We have other guys who know they have to step up and sustain that high level of play."

NFL | Hopkins leaning towards retirement
Wed, 29 Mar 2006 13:29:14 -0800

Brad Willis, of the Titans Radio Network, reports free agent OT Brad Hopkins (Titans) is leaning towards retirement. "My gut would tell me no (I won't play in 2006)," said Hopkins, who was released by the Tennessee Titans in early March. "I haven't announced it officially, but I'm really leaning towards sticking around here for my family, I've developed relationships with business people around here that I feel like I've can be productive in. Nashville's my home." Hopkins said he visited with the New York Jets, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Atlanta Falcons, but none of the teams elected to move quickly to sign him.
