Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread

The decision that the Redskins make about Kirk will only be about whether or not they should go forward with Kirk as their starting QB. By that I mean, the only question is "Once the team has been built around KC, can the Redskins win a Super Bowl with him as their starting QB?". It's not about the money because SM has made it clear that the Skins will be willing to pay fair market value to get the QB they want. Also, Kirk doesn't need to be a future All-Pro or Top 10 QB for the answer to the Big Question to be "Yes". At his point, what you seem to be attempting to do is to convince people like me who have more faith in Kirk than you do to have less faith in him until we see his full season body of work. You should try to understand that it's not as if those of us who already believe in Kirk don't realize that he might fail - we do. Still, in my case, I don't choose to temper my enthusiasm about Kirk's future. It's more fun for me that way.

Your right,I dont have as much faith in Kirk as some, but I want Kirk to succeed as much as anybody. But my recent postings was just about people saying pay Kirk and bringing up stats after 4 games, way too premature for that. And even in his run last year he still had some clunkers,I mean how does he lose to Dallas on MNF to a backup thats not even in the league anymore? And that goes for this yr too? Dak not only showed more poise in that game but in the 4 games I've seen Dak play he's showed me more poise then Cousins has in 5 years. 2 examples, the Philly game last yr when he kneeled down before the half to ruin our chances for a score, then this year when Jay opted to try and score with 5 or 6 seconds left{fucking terrible coaching} and Kirk held onto the ball and took a sack instead of throwing it away. That gentlemen does not show grace under pressure. In my book Kirk still has a lot to prove and hopefully he will because it's going to be on his shoulders with this defense and our shitty coaches he has a lot to overcome. But if Kirk continues at his inconsistent play why pay him? Look what Dak and Wentz have done this year,we can always draft another QB ![]()

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
I'm a big Kirk Cousins fan, I have been his fan since he arrived here in Washington, and while my earlier posts this season suggested that he still has an interception problem, and at some point may or may not be benched for McCoy, I still think Cousins is an average QB, and I feel that in this league, that is enough to win football games.
I have compared him this year to other QB's like Eli Manning, who are interception prone at times, and to be fair, Eli is a Super Bowl QB who has thrown in his career 298 TDs to 203 INTS, which seems very "Cousins Like" if Cousins has as long as a career as Eli. The problem I think, that others have pointed out, is that the Defense is so bad that Cousins and company will have to produce upwards of 30 points a game for us to have a shot at winning. We will likely finish the season at 8-8, possibly worse than that, and for that reason alone, Cousins is going to be shipped off to somewhere else where he most likely will have a supporting cast around him and he will look like a star. I have said since they failed to reach a deal, that the Skins have soured on Cousins because he refused their initial offer, gave him the franchise tag because they knew they had no other option at QB this year, and they know that this coming offseason, he will be someone else's problem.

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
Statistics aren't irrelevant, but you have to interpret them correctly. The fact that Cousins is 11th in passing yards and 13th in rating and whatever whatever, that's a function of both the quality of his play AND the quality of the offense around him, AND the situations the team has found itself in. So QBs can play to their ability, but they don't all face the same situations, they don't all have the same lines and same weapons, and they haven't all faced the same defenses.
So you can't just go off numbers and draw a conclusion based solely on that. The question you have to answer is: if we had a different QB playing behind this line, with these weapons, and in the situations we've faced, how would that QB have done? Not easy to answer. But I think half the QBs in the NFL would have put up as good or better numbers than Cousins, and half would have been worse. Our line is absolutely awesome at protecting, and between Reed Jackson Crowder and Garcon, some of the best weapons in the game. Last year Cousins was 6th in QBR, but I do not think he is the 6th best QB in the league. I think there's probably 10-15 guys who could have matched his numbers. BUT THAT'S NOT THE POINT! The point is football is a dependent game, and QBs aren't the only thing that matters. If Cousins can put up the 6th best QBR in the league partly because he's solid but also because he's benefitting from a good line and great weapons, then you've got a winning offensive formula. You don't F with it. You try to pay him fairly - not as the 6th best QB in the league, but as a good starter you can win with. Cousins and the offense are not what's preventing us from being a very good team (well, he wasn't helping in the first two games this year). But now he looks much better. Our problem is defense. If McCloughan keeps Cousins and this offense together, and manages to put together a defense, THEN we've got something. You don't need a top 5 QB in order to put up a top 5 offensive performance. Keep that in mind.

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
Joe Gibbs proved that numerous times. Under Gibbs, the Skins had top-rated offenses in 83,87,89,91, and 99. The QB's were Joe Theismann, Jay Schroeder, Doug Williams, Mark Rypien, and Brad Johnson. Three of those teams went to the Super Bowl and two of them became NFL Champions.

Unfortunately Gibbs isnt here. Neither is arguably the greatest o-line ever, a hof running back, a hof wr , or a stud defense. All things that help u win without a top five qb. Which brings me back to KC is doing what he is doing with ... well.... a mediocre coach, less than mediocre defense, and less than mediocre run game. All a credit to him. That is why he will not go anywhere. The Skins know this. They will continue to build around him. |

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
Lets not completely burn down Cousins chances of turning into a top ten QB though. I think one very important aspect of stats is looking at them over the long haul, and not in a little window - where all of those situational factors are going to really effect the outcome.
Yes KC has weapons, and the oline has been great with pass pro. However our D certainly has not helped the offense by keeping them in rhythm and on the field. Our run game (minus last week) has been completely irrelevant for most of the time KC has been our starter. Teams dont even worry about it. So KC has done what he has done against defenses keying on the pass almost entirely. |

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
What I want to see from Cousins is better awareness when the pocket breaks down. When he has time (and thank god we pass block well) he can pick you apart. When the pocket DOES break down, he has major trouble. I feel like he's pretty good with hot reads against a blitz, but the second I see him pull the ball down and start running, I get antsy in my pantsies.

I think cousins was really pressing the first couple games...I'm gonna let him settle down and play out the rest of the season

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
Long way to go this season but he's been sort of disappointing. Maybe I was expecting more from him. He's just had some absolute stupid ass plays this year that he shouldn't be making....the backbreaking int against Dallas, the bonehead play to end the half, stupid sacks, he can clean that shit up. Hopefully he will.

But we could still win alot of games with him if the defense wasn't so bad and he didn't have to be asked to do as much as he's doing now because we are always behind and we have no running game...
