I dont know. I try and ask myself what if Jonathan was surrounded by the talent as those two players.

You could also say that Jonathan did not play against the teams they had to play. Like LSU, Bama, Georgia, FSU, South Carolina, those teams are loaded with talent and even with the talent on their team they still stood out, especially Elam who made plays everywhere in big games against UGA, FSU, Louisville and LSU. It is harder to stand out when other players are talented around you.

I would take Elam over Cyprien right now, but come draft day a team taking Cyprien above Elam won't be a shocker to me at all.

So you would not be surprised if Cyprien would be taken over Elam? I like your boldness.

Well, if Cyprien runs a 4.43 and Elam runs 4.67 then I could see it too.
But short of a scenario like the one above Elam will go before Cyprien.

Speaking of Elam. I would love it if this draft came true.

This draft shows Phillip Thomas and Jordan Poyer still on the board when the Skins pick Elam. Since Elam projects as a SS, I'd rather have the FS or the CB because I think we have a more urgent need to fill those positions.

If the Skins were to sign Jairus Byrd in FA, then Elam would make more sense to me.

Also, I like Shawn Williams at SS, so I might be inclined to target him in Round 3 and take Thomas or Poyer in Round 2.

Both SS and FS are needs, you do not reach for the more urgent need. You draft the best player available, its how the Ravens do it, lets copy them.

Neither Thomas nor Poyer would be 2nd Round reaches. Since all three players are considered to be either 1st or 2nd Round talents by some evaluators, there probably isn't much difference between them. So I'd still take the FS Thomas or the CB Poyer instead of the SS Elam. I would personally prefer either Thomas or Poyer to Elam regardless of position.

Also, I don't believe that any team drafts BPA over need all the time, regardless of what they claim.

The Patriots draft based on need for their secondary, often reaching for players... and that is why their secondary still sucks besides Talib, who they did not draft. Most draft scouts have Elam as a late 1st to early second, I think Elam is significantly better than Thomas and Poyer and if he drops to the Redskins, they would be lucky to draft him. But only time will tell. Plus Strong Safety was not exactly a strength this season.

Did you ever think that the patriots drafted those secondary players because they thought they were the best players available (in the patriots eyes) at that time...?

I'll call Bill and ask him. But seeing as a large portion of the secondary players that they drafted were reaches for when the Patriots drafted them... I highly doubt it.

I think Elam projects as well or better to FS then Phillip Thomas. This is shaping up to be deep as SAF.

I think of Matt Elam more as a SS because he is such a great tackler and because he is 5-10.

Phillip Thomas, at 6-0, seems to be longer than Elam and he has exceptional ball skills. That's why I would prefer him at FS.

That said, I would gladly take either one of them.

I agree with you that the safety class is strong. I like all of the following safeties:

FS - Kenny Vaccaro, Phillip Thomas, David Amerson (I think he'll be a FS in the pros), Baccari Rambo, and Tony Jefferson.

SS - Matt Elam and Shawn Williams

I'm hopeful that we'll be able to draft one of these players.
