Anyway I want Him to get the job. Offense will be very similar, and between him and Gruden they will fix the RZ issues. Christ all you have to do is dumb them down a little and you're headed in the right direction. McVay always got cute and out thunk himself down there. With our weapons and the continuity and experience Cavanaugh brings to the table McVay is a total afterthought.
Now Romeo has to realize that his defensive prowess is a waste in Houston because they are terrible on the other side of the ball. We got money and draft picks to sprinkle all over our defense, and that guy would make us instant contenders. (I know it is a pipe dream).

I thought the same exact thing. I'm sure I didn't dream up the idea that Matt Cavanaugh was being promoted to OC. If he's not promoted, I'm kind of nervous about him getting promoted elsewhere. I think he should be given as much, if not more, credit for developing Kirk Cousins. But maybe it's the same as Bill Callahan. Maybe Cavanaugh is more than happy with his job as a quarterback coach and doesn't want to be promoted? If that's the case, then I definitely understand continuing to search for McVay's replacement.

And speaking of Romeo C, McVay pretty much gave Phillips the job right away, and we could essentially do the same for Crennel. Not only would it satisfy the Rooney rule, but how great would it look on the Redskins to quickly hire a minority candidate? And a successful one at that? But yes, probably a pipe dream because he's probably not moving on from Houston.

I suppose I'm starting to see the light on how slowly the process has been for finding a new DC. I think I'm also seeing that even though everyone getting interviewed is getting interviewed for the DC position, but I think in reality, it's more or less informational interviews about different schemes and maybe even coaching strategies of the 'skins top two or three choices for the position. I really don't believe our front office wants to hire a guy like Rob Ryan, but he did work with Pettine.

It could be that the front office is also trying to assemble the rest of the coaching staff for the new DC, and they're also trying to find guys who would fit best with the philosophy and schemes that the new DC is going to implement. While, normally, I would assume you'd want the coordinator to bring in his own coaching staff, I suppose with Jay Gruden feeling like this is a do or die year, he wants the best coaching staff assembled, not a buddy system hire.

Yes, often these interviews are more for information gathering. Whether it's the team wanting an outsiders perspective and opinion on their talent and needs, or the team wants more info on another coach they have a more serious eye on. Or it could even be an agent asking a GM for a favor to keep his client's name out there. It never hurts to sit down with someone.

Yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head with the last part - keeping the agent's client's name out there. The coach can't feel used, because, you never know what comes out of the meeting. Maybe you don't get that DC position but you've wowed them enough to land some sort of coaching position with the team, and that's better than not working at all.

Crennel is a fine DC, IMO. If he's willing, it might be worthwhile to interview him.

IF Bradley or Pettine are not going to be it, Crennel would be very cool by me!!!! A DC with HC experience is a plus in my book. He would give us an aggressive D as well!

I think where McVay will be missed is in game planning. His play calling was fine, but ultimately replaceable. Where somebody needs to step up is in designing route concepts that attack a team's weakness, and communicating the reads to Cousins during practice.

He was hired as a head coach for a reason, I don't think we can assume we'll be fine without thinking hard about how we'll shuffle duties around and remain organized.

If we hire a good QB coach then Cavanaugh can step up, and if Gruden is smart about organizing a process and assigning duties, we won't miss a beat.

I'm a little worried though that Gruden isn't the most organized guy in the world.

I think Gruden is best when the organization is in place for him. He's a great X's and O's guy (much like the ol' ball coach), but I'm a little skeptical as to his building a coaching staff. That's where I believe Scot and some of the other top brass are trying to help Gruden with putting together a decent defensive coaching staff. I think that part might be over Gruden's head.

As for game planning, I think we will miss McVay. I think we'll miss him with some of the playcalling. But, Gruden has been a successful offensive coordinator, and he's been a successful quarterback (albeit in the Arena league) and successful head coach (again Arena League), so I don't think he's completely clueless when it comes to designing route concepts and so forth. He's also got another ex-quarterback with Matt Cavanaugh on staff as well, so I think there's enough to keep the continuity going. Still would like that solid OC to come in and buy into the offensive philosophy.

Wonder if Al Saunders is available? (I keed, I keed!)
