No secret: Vikings plan to draft a QB - NFL Nation Blog - ESPN

Maybe we can trade down to 12 and pick up another 2nd from Min..

Re: 2011 NFL Draft

If we decide to go defense in round 1, I've got a few theories after watching film.
Over-hyped:
Aldon Smith - Don't see it with him. Sure he's a freakish athlete, but it ends there.
J.J. Watt - This guy is as slow as they come. Nothing stands out at all. Did I mention he's slow?
Cameron Hayward - Underwhelming with everything he does. Gives up on plays, isn't great on the rush.. Don't like him
Da'Quan Bowers - Way too much time spent doing nothing. He did have a breakout year, but he wasn't anything special last year. I wouldn't draft him top 7.

Future Stars (My Opinion):
Ryan Kerrigan - This guy is Clay Matthews. He out muscles his opponents, never quits, stands out in every game. Taking him at #10 will pay huge dividends to us later.
Von Miller - Beast. Has a great pass rush, but an even better ability to make a big tackle.
Prince Amukamara - If He falls we can't pass him up. Patrick Peterson is without a doubt the better corner, but Amukamara is being overlooked as the "2nd best corner". He's a future shutdown corner with ability to tackle in the box.

My targets:
#1 Blaine Gabbert
#2 Prince Amukamara
#3 Ryan Kerrigan
#4 Von Miller
#5 Jake Locker

Re: 2011 NFL Draft

i think we should take a hard look at stephen paea. he is a beastly nose tackle from oregon state. 6-1 310, mid 1st round projection now, but his stock will surely rise. 49 reps of 225 at the combine. we need a nose tackle.

He may be able to play NT but it looks like he's a better fit as a 3-4 DE or 4-3 DT. I think he'd definitely be an upgrade over what we currently have.

I'm all for taking the Nebraska kicker. He would instantly be probably the best kicker in D.C. well... ever.

Those with a proven kicker.....some of them may be looking when you're talking about a guy considered the best kicker in NCAA history.

I still don't see how people view Paea as a NT, he's 6'1 310. You have to be heavier for NT, plus I've watched some film on him and he can be single blocked by other Pac 10 OLineman, if thats the case, what will happen when he gets to the NFL? a NT is someone who gets double teamed every play, and controls the line of scrimmage. Paea would be engulfed by other centers, he is more of a penetrator than a pusher. Phil Taylor, Jerrell Powe, and Kenrick Ellis are NT's, Paeas a 4-3 DT not a 3-4 guy.

Why couldn't he put on 20 lbs?

He could but theres putting on 20 lbs and it effecting your game in a positive way, then theres putting on 20lbs and it effects your game in a negative way...Paea would need to put on 30 lbs IMO to be anywhere near NT affective.

Plus he's coming off an injury and supposedly he's injury prone, so I don't really like this guy so..next player please

Re: 2011 NFL Draft

Man I just loving the fact we are talking about NT(s). Thats where we need to focus...its pivotal to our success of making 3-4 transition. When it comes to talent at that spot this year, I think much more talent in the NT position than the QB position.

he'd also need to grow about 2 inches in height. As a 3-4 NT, he would need to be tall enough to see the flow of the play in hopes of redirecting traffic. As a 4-3 DT, he's tall enough as his job would be penetrating into the backfield...

What about Aubrayo Franklin of the 49ers? The Guy is 6'1 317 and is considered an elite Nose Tackle. Jay Ratliff is also barely over 300 pounds yet he's easily one of the few Cowboys that actually deserved to go to the pro bowl over the course of the last couple years.

Everyone wants Vince Wilfolk but the fact of the matter is that 3-4 teams are having no trouble plugging inplayers that are less then 320 pounds.

6'1 is actually an ideal height for a Nose Tackle in todays NFL as Guards and Centers are usually 6'2/6'3. Teams want guys that can get under the pads of these interior players, hence the short-squaty typecast.

Casey Hampton 6'1, Vince Wilfolk 6'2, BJ Raji 6'2, Aubrayo Franklin 6'1, Kelly Gregg 6'0.

I wouldn't call Franklin elite, but he seems to be one of the lighter true NTs in the league, I would say he's an exception to the typical 3-4 NT. Ratliff thrived in Wade Phillips' version of the 3-4, which we are not running, and now Rob Ryan wants to turn him into a DE.

I would rather for the team to pick up a NT that already has the built to be an NT and learn the position, rather for someone needing to bulk up and learn the position. That's just my personal preference. BJ Raji was already 330ish pounds when the Packers picked him up. Wilfork was also at around 350 I believe when he was drafted. In the end, we need a good player for that position, but I don't want to see a player built for another scheme (i.e. a 4-3 DT) shoved into a 3-4 NT role.

Re: 2011 NFL Draft

We have a NT need. Does anyone think AMontgomery could have been a 3-4 NT? I had high hopes for him but his work ethic was rumored poor and I think we signed AH shortly and after and that has worked out....

I can't wait till the future arrives when we have draft picks and are able to complete in the draft process.
