Re: Saddam hangs
All of you that are in support of the death sentence are totally forgetting about how this is just gonna cause more sectarian violence...political leaders get treated differently..period that is how it is...no one gets hanged nowadays bc it is barbaric and as a civilization we have moved beyond that..even tho the criminal may have been barbaric.
Yeah it isnt fair, but he should have gotten a different judgement, if the court system in place was not based on anger and retaliation this would not happen. He should not have been killed...only exacerbates the problem.

Re: Saddam hangs
Our retarded government should have handed him to The International Court. Sadly we are more inept than we realize.

Re: Saddam hangs
I personally dont care how much it cost to execute someone vs. life in prison. As it was said it dont cost too much if they get it done in 30 days or less. And inmates still have access to anything and everything they had on the streets. They can still harm people. I must sadly admit I have a family member whos been in prison for over ten years who had the misfortune of being involved in a 3 person fight and one ended up dead. The dead guy was trying to rob the other two. And I can tell you its easy to get things into prison.Guards will do anything for the right amount of $$.

Re: Saddam hangs
Let me go on the record and say I think we, America, executed Saddam.
Yes, he was hung in Iraq by Iraqis, but his blood is on our hands. |

We have a way of interpreting what we deem to be peace and a civilized community for other countries. It's really unfortunate we put all of our eggs in one basket with Iraq, because now Syria and Iran, and to some extent North Korea have taken note that we've used a lot of political capital and they are most certainly going to continue to pursue their 'programs'. |

So yes - He did maintain civil peace. There is a civil war in Iraq mainly b/c of: 1) the decades of Sunni repression of the Shi'a; 2) the Shi'a's desire for revenge and power; 3) the US administration's incredibly misjudgment as to the depth and breadth of the divisions and hatred hidden by Saddam's vigorous repression. Oh, and don't forget the Kurds (another group "held at bay" by Saddam).
