The problem is, we're in a position where we have to try to make some moves.

If we do nothing and stick with what we have, then prepare yourself for another 5-11 record, or worse.

I honestly can't see us picking up more than Fletcher and 1-2 other average starters. I simply do not think that our cap situation will allow us to compete with other teams who can front-load deals for top-notch FAs. We're not cap hell, but it's not exactly the cap heavan that most other teams are in.

Everyone wants a quick fix. Becasue of past blunders, this could be a 2-3 year rebuilding job on defense. Everyone needs to be patient.

Well, I want us to be better in 2007. Does that qualify as wanting a quick fix? I don't think signing Fletcher to a modest contract represents the recklessness we've seen in recent years. Unfortunately, he's not coming here for peanuts. And now it looks like he's not a sure bet to come here anyway.

I don't know if we have all draft picks lined up in 2008 -- I certainly hope they're all there. I figure we do what we can in free agency this year with a linebacker or two, a defensive back, and that's probably all we'll be able to afford. But whatever they do, they MUST leave the '08 draft picks INTACT.

If they start giving away next year's picks for guys like Rocky McIntosh (and boy, wouldn't the 38th overall pick in the 2nd round work great for us this year) then they haven't learned.

I agree, patience counts. And I'm under no delusions that our dreadful defense will be shored up in one offseason. But drafting a stud at defensive tackle, getting a sure-tackling veteran at MLB, and (this is where I leave for Fantasy World) landing a come-out-of-nowhere wonder in the secondary might just right the ship for 2007 -- and we haven't mortgaged the future to do it.

I thik the Fletcher deal is more likely to happen than not (barring some miracle by the Bills). All this talk in PFT of a deal not being done was probably "leaked" by someone close to Fletcher or the Redskins so as not to create a speculation of tampering

I disagree. I seriously believe even if we had the same exact players as last year we would be a 9+ win team this year. why, you ask? well, first of all the offense will be in a much more comfortable position, as a matter of fact I think its gonna being almost unstopable Secondly, our defense couldnt possibly repeat last years performance......

Also with the lower picks maybe we should think WR, because with these insane contracts that are gonna catch up with us, we are gonna have to cut Lloyd and Randle El eventually.

Remember that Williams took a defense that finished #25 in 2003 and had them finish #3 in 2004. That year we traded away Champ Bailey, Trotter, and Armistead. Our star LB Lavar Arrington was sidelined all year, and Mike Barrow, the guy who was supposed to be our star replacement for Trotter, never saw the field. (And don't even get me started on what people expected our d-line to be like against the run).

My point is that we really don't know what we will play like until the season starts or what (or who) we might stumble onto (Pierce).

I have been hearing rumors today about Bly going to Denver.This doesn't come from a article.This comes from Detroit radio stations.I live a hour away from Detroit and the word right now is Denver.That would kill our chances of getting him.We have nothing to trade and Denver has our 3rd round pick to trade. I was hoping he would just be cut,but if teams want to trade picks away.Detroit's not going to cut him.

Michael Smith on NFL Live just got finished saying he's pretty sure Dre Bly is gonna end up a Redskin. Apparently we are gonna look to bring back Smoot at a big discount if the Vikings release him as well. I guess Springs doesn't want to restructure, and he's NEVER healthy, so I wouldn't care if we cut him. I think we could get Smoot and Bly for combined what we'd cough up for Nate Clements. I'd rather have the extra bodies than the overpriced star, especially if Springs leaves...

And apparently Nate Clements is looking for a contract with between $20-25 million guaranteed. We just can't go out and spend like that again. We need depth at too many positions to blow our wad on one guy.
