This is a case, as it often is, where a guy, based on talent and skill alone, is worth a certain amount on the open market and based on chemistry and so forth is worth a little more to us. No need to le thim walk unless his contract demands are just out of line. Give him a top 5 deal/extension and move on to Taylor. It would be silly to let it get to the point where he would leave.
You can't replace Cooley, he is very HUMBLE, team-player, does everything what coaches ask of him, he never drop ball (thanks to someone in earlier strings to remind me, I never realized that until he brought it up), and everything.. And u say that he is replaceable?

Is there anyone who is a Redskins fan who doesn't believe that Cooley is a top 5 TE in the league right now? I can't think of 5 better.

Gonzo
Gates
Heap maybe

I mean there are a lot of guys who could come in and probably do just as well. Miller, Witten, Smith, Clark are all pretty even talent and skill wise compared to Cooley but Cooley fits so well in the system and is used extremely well. He runs good routes, knows how to get open, runs heavyand hard, catches almost anything thrown his way, it goes on and on. In short just does everything he is supposed to do very well. He doesn't have the athleticism of Gates or Gonzo but after those guys he is as good as anyone in the league.
Gates then Cooley, in my opinion. Who can burn in the open field and break tackles like Chris Cooley?

I didn't watch all games cuz I was in Rochester, I'm student of RIT.. I had to go to Tully's to watch Skins' games.. Maybe he dropped his fair share but not much, I mean, not much for most of us to remember..

???

I can think of one. That is how few he drops. One sticks out in 3 seasons.

And let's not go overboard on his talent level guys. He is good for sure but athletically he doesn't touch Gates or Gonzo. He simply does the lesser athletic tasks of a TE extremely well and that compensates a lot for his athleticism. Not to say he isn't athletic but he isn't in the super atletic freak mold of Gates or Gonzo

So was Pierce. Dude came in as an undrafted FA and became a starter and a leader on our defense. But I understand what your saying about Cooley. It's hard not to like him, and his laid back attitude.

I'm sorry, but I still stand by the fact that he is a better overall player than Gates. He does EVERYTHING exceptionally well. Gates is probably a better pass catcher, but Cooley runs after better, blocks better, and basically is better overall (in my opinion).

I don't think there is any question Okoye is going to be a really good to great player someday. But he is going to need two or three years before he really develops into that type of player. He wasn't the right pick for us IMO.

I think TE in the NFL is an easy position to fill unless you have Gates, Gonzalez or even Kellen Winslow. Yes, I said Winslow. He led in NFL in TE receptions his first year on the field with a suspect QB so he is a serious difference maker. Cooley is not A. Gates or T. Gonzalez. So he is replaceable IMO. But no question he is very valubale part of our offense and seems to have real good chemistry with JC.

Re: Joyner: Cooley underrated

I'm assuming replaceable by another top three (top two for me) TE in the league? Also, remember that the Browns had NO receivers to speak of.

It's not Cooley, it how he is used. He is definitely not easily replaceable.

Re: Joyner: Cooley underrated

Anyone is nuts not to think Cooley is one of the best TE's in the league. I always get him as my starting fantasy TE every year since year 2 of his being a Skin. Everyone here playing fantasy this year should pick him up as well!!!! With JC bound to improve, along with our Wr corp, I look for things to open up more for Cooley and he will get more scores and yardage. Only TE's arguably better than Chris are Gates and Gonzalez, but our O is more potent than both SD and KC.

He just said what I'm thinking.. Yes, some of you guys are right.. In general, TE players may be easy to replace, but not Cooley.. He is all-round player, hell, we even won some games because of him..
