Re: Just plain ugly

I think the call was right when Gibbs decided to kick on 2nd down. I'm sure because we are the Redskins something would have gone wrong like a holding call and we would have been out of field goal range.

Randel El looked great, I'd love to see some more of that throughout the season. The ground game looked great, I loved how they juggled RBs (except that time Betts did all the work and Portis got put in right by the redzone. Let Betts finish that off!)

We need more on our passing game. It's a waste if we have to keep Cooley in to block, he's not a blocker. He's an offensive weapon. On another positive note, I saw Betts make 2 very nice blocks, something he was terrible at last year.

Defense looked great on run D. Pass D I'm not as worried as everyone else. I have a few questions, 1) Where are all those GWill blitzes I love to see? 2) Is it me or did 53, 21, and 30 seem to be more or less not near the ball all day? Maybe that was a gameplan, I have no clue. But I didn't see those three get much done.

It's very hard for a pass D to look good when Trent Green has all day to find an open receiver. We have some positive to look at, but we have a lot more negative to look at. It's going to be a very tough week in practice for these guys.
I agree with everything except what I put in bold.
Blocking is the key to winning, if we need our TE to block, then his ass needs to block. Had it not been for the drops, we would all be talking about this "high powered" offense...so what Saunders is doing is working.

ps- I said before that Cooley would have an off season offensively due to the fact that the Skins signed him too early, he has nothing to fight for now...when before he was fighting for a contract. I love the guy, don't get me wrong, but we aren't going to see Cooley as much as we have in the past.

Re: Just plain ugly

It was a sloppy win, but a win nevertheless. I think Carlos Rogers continues to give up waaay too much cushion. The dolphins were definitely targeting Smoot, but I think Smoot's play will improve as the season goes along. He should've had that INT. At least we were in position to get a pick, unlike last season.

Randle El! What can I say? The guy played great today! That catch of the deflection from Thomas as awesome! Would've been great if he had made it into the end zone, but at least there is another wide receiver who can be a deep threat other than Moss now.

Speaking of Moss, I'm not sure what was up with him today, but those drops were unlike him. I will say, some of the passes Campbell threw should've been a little bit lower and a little bit taken off on them. Still, there were some dropped passes that if they were caught, could've been big for us!

Campbell started off bad but improved. He missed one sure TD pass to Moss, but over all, his deep passes are right on! I haven't seen anybody have as good of a deep pass from this team since Mark Rypien.

Oh, and there is no need for Clinton Portis to play preseason. We have exactly what we want at RB!

Overall, very sloppy, but we came out with a win. We didn't get those close wins last year. I think we have a good chance at going 2-0! The eagles looked pretty sloppy today as well.

If you ask me Santana looked scared. Especially on the one where he jumped and it was just a little behind him but he was looking at the guy about to hit him instead of the ball.

Definitely an off day for him, but I look for Moss to make up for it next week.

Has anybody said anything about Andre Carter? They guy should have a good solid year this year.

They way they talked about him, you would have thought he was the second coming of Bill Walsh....

I'm glad we got the win...but we definately need to improve a little on defense...they lit us up underneath with those 5 - 10 yard passes...
True-that squrrelco3, even with the 3 second delay during the 4th quarter, I had it on AM 950 the rest of the way with the T.V. on mute.

Dominant?.?. I wouldn't say that. While our running game looked good, our passing game was all kinds of out of sync. Hopefully JC will get that worked out soon.... Philly is no team to be trying to figure out how to throw the ball to your receivers, team. This team will come up and hit you in the mouth, and put your passing game back a few years.

Re: Just plain ugly

Ok so I still have huge questions about our Dline. Yes they helped stop the run, but that was more our safeties and LBs coming up to tackle. But what about a pass rush? I dont think our guys did a good enough job pressuring the QB. It seems like the front 4 cant get pressure on their own. With the except of 1-2 pressures by Andre Carter, our D line didnt seem to give them too much of a scare on passing downs.

Re: Just plain ugly

I actually thought the d-line did a decent job when rushing by themselves. Carter had some pressures and there were a few other times where Green got flushed out of the pocket.

And they were definitely stout against the run, any questions there were answered quite clearly today.

Re: Just plain ugly

You know what blows my mind? The Redskins ran the exact same formation shift on 4th down that they ran in the pre-season against Baltimore and Miami still jumped offsides. That's bad coaching. I could see that from a mile away. Gibbs would never go for it on 4th and 2 in that situation.

I'm not sure why they flagged us. Sellers may have moved late which would make it two men in motion at the same time rather than a shift or the ref can flag Yoder for simulating the snap if he begins his motion with too jerky a movement that is unnatural and obviously an attempt to draw the defense offsides. At any rate, I like the attempted deception. I would have liked a better explanation from the refs, especially since Gibbs told him what they were going to do before the game.

Yes they did not get good pressure today, what is new. But, I did notice quite a few tipped balls a the line of scrimmage though. Just like they did in 05'.

Yeah I dont know about that call on 4 2 by the refs. Gibbs seemed to be pretty pissed about that too in the presser.

Carter didn't look that good overall. Had only 2 pressures, 1 sack. He started off with a bang, then went back to mediocre.

I agree...Moss will be back next week. 100+ yard performance next week.

My first reaction was that Sellers moved late. They have to move at the same time. And this is an easy call for the refs. But the refs apparently told Gibbs they flagged Yoder because when he started his motion he did it too abruptly. If that's the case it's a horseshit call and a key one. The Redskins put it right there on the Baltimore film for Miami to see. Maybe next time Gibbs should have the staff put a message on the Jumbo-tron: "We're going to try to draw you offsides now, be careful."
