Not sure about the Lions. But for what it's worth, apparently the Packers offered him a contract to play RT, and Jones said no. So it seems they didn't pass on him.

Re: Redskins cut Mason and Alridge, sign OT Levi Jones

Vinny aka "Bobby the Brain Heenan" cut 2 RB's knowing Portis is not 100%.

Portis misses practice with lower-leg problems

Running back Clinton Portis sat out practice today because of leg problems.

"It's really one leg," he said. "It's just my right leg. I've got plantar faciitis, an ankle, the inside of my MCL, and a calf all on my right leg. So if I can get a new lower leg, I'll be fine."

In the 14-6 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Portis rushed for a season-high 109 yards on 15 carries (a 7.3-yard average). He gained 78 yards on one rush in the third quarter - the longest gain of his career.

Portis acknowledged he has not had much interaction with new play-caller Sherman Lewis, who came out of retirement about two weeks ago to serve as an offensive consultant. Owner Daniel Snyder promoted Lewis, 67, to call plays after stripping Jim Zorn of the responsibility following the team's latest dreary loss to a formerly winless team, which has occurred four times this season.

Lewis is unfamiliar with the team's personnel and knows little about Washington's running game, but Portis expects the running game to work well.

"It ain't hard, I mean, you either run gut, counter, stretch, toss, dive, or draw," Portis said. "You can call it however you want to call it, but them are the only runs in football. For him to be an offensive coordinator for as long as he has, I'm sure he knows that as well. Maybe it's the formations. I don't know why he would say that, but I don't think it's too hard to call the running game."

Well 3 of the guys who started for us last week probably haven't even earned "just a name" status.

A little scouting report on Ganther.
Running back Quinton Ganther is a downhill runner who packs substantial power in his 5-foot-9 frame. He is versatile enough to contribute as a featured tailback or a fullback. In his first two years with the Titans, he spent the majority of his time on the team’s practice squad (on active roster Sept. 16-30, 2006 and Oct. 20-Nov. 5, 2007). Then, in 2008, he spent his first full season on the club’s 53-man roster, contributing nine carries for 61 yards and six receptions for 43 yards in 13 games. In pre-draft workouts, he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.56 seconds and bench pressed 430 pounds. He was selected with the Titans’ third pick of the seventh round (compensatory selection, 246th overall) in the 2006 NFL Draft.

Hopefully this helps O-line depth, but I'm sorry that we haven't seen Alridge on the field during a regular season game. I can't imagine that Jones will be ready for at least a few weeks, so I agree with the earlier post that Jones should have been signed much earlier in the season.

Good signing. Here's to the rebuilding of the OL. Now, we just need June Jones to sign.

I'm sure Levi Jones wanted to be a starter somewhere, maybe the Lions and Packers didn't guaranteed him that...with Samuels out for the year he pretty much has the starting spot (I hope).

Besides, this is better than going to against the Iggles with Heyer and Williams.

If anything, this is a clear sign that Samuels is going on the IR. Otherwise, why else sign Jones today?

Correction, we cut 2 running backs to sign one! Net result is -1 running backs.

I guess the coaches don't see any upside to Mason or Aldridge.

Re: Redskins cut Mason and Alridge, sign OT Levi Jones

Oh boy...this is bad...but...don't expect Jones to play this week..no way...good thing there is a bye. Ganther runs like Rock a bit...not many moves..depth only.
I guess Vinny is bailing on the scat back idea and realizes the only way to run now is straight through the line...either that or someone else has noticed that.

If you got a crappy line...you need to spend ZERO time behind the line of scrimmage.
Another note is Mason absolutely SUCKED at pass protection and alridge was way too small to pick up a blitz...that makes them unusable...maybe this new kid can block or something.

Vinny had to do something...his job is on the line...I wouldn't be suprised if he trades a midrounder for another olineman...heck...he may not be here to deal with the missing pick if he doesn't do something more...he needs to move now to get value out of the bye...ideally a young primary backup on a West coast team....either that or an OLB...but due to pressure on offense from the media, he would never do that.
