The "almost" Times Square Bomb

Back to the attempt, I wonder if he planned on being a suicide bomber, and when it did not go as planned he tried to get out of town; or if he was trying to avoid the blast altogether. If the vehicle had blown up, finding the VIN of the specific vehicle would have been a humongous undertaking. Assuming this guy is the right guy, then good job piecing it all together that quickly.

So how did this guy manage to get on the plane when he was on the no-fly list? Apparently the carrier or airport didn't have an updated list? He bought a one way ticket to Pakistan with cash... isn't a transaction like that supposed to set off all sorts of red flags??

Just glad they caught the guy.

Here is one scenario, still doesn't explain the getting on the actual plane though: The FBI/Homeland Security had the airport wanted him to go through security so that they knew he had no explosives or weapons etc.

Of course if Jack Bauer had been in charge (and it wasn't the last episode) he would have gotten on the plane as Jack was running through the airport yelling "Turn that plane around NOW"!
I love 24, and imagine that this investigation was done at nearly as hectic a pace as that show runs at.

8.5 years later and we're still getting our shit together. to think most of us have dealt with all the "inconveniences" of extra security and yet it seems some of the basics aren't getting done. like that xmas underwear bomber guy. didn't his DAD call the freakin Feds to say he thought his son would do something? meanwhile they're makin my 80-year-old father inlaw throw away his shaving cream.

Well as is always the case, if someone is intent on doing something evil, and is willing to sacrifice his/her life, it is very difficult to stop them. I fly a couple times a year, and it's amazing how quickly people got used to taking off belts, shoes etc.

He sounds like a messed up, confused, and frustrated guy pushed to his limits by financial ruin. Sad story if you ask me. Even more sad that he's going to be labeled by some due to his religion.

ALL terrorists are messed up and confused. We don't need to hug him and feel sorry about his bad luck...we need to eliminate people like him getting into our country.

Our biggest asset in combating terrorists is that they tend to be not so bright people. Someone with half a brain cannot be stopped with road blocks. They simply don't have the brain power to pull off an attack. The universe is nice like that.

And, I will simply assert that I believe lots of liberals had something very close to the opposite series of reactions (here’s one small example of what I’m talking about). If this had been some Tim McVeigh type, Frank Rich would know exactly what he was going to write for his Sunday column, and he would be excited about writing it. I don’t want to say he’d be happy about it (and he certainly wouldn’t be happy about the murder victims if the bomb went off). But he would certainly be smug and righteous and full of a certain emotion that looks a lot like the glee one feels when you get to say “I told you so.”

Instead, that state of mind no doubt describes quite a few conservatives this morning.

He often says things like this because he knows gullible liberals and media outlets will make fools of themselves by repeating and believing it. It's a take on how President Bush "bombed" the levies because he wanted to kill black people.

His satire is always based on actual statements by actual idiots.
