Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!

1) Doughty + Buchannon on *that* play.
2) F.Davis whiffing on FG block!
3) Run blocking - no holes, Portis - no runs. No time off the freaking clock to protect a 17 point lead.
4) Entire pass defense for giving up 300 yards to two receivers after finally getting 27 points from the offense. Really?
5) Devin Thomas for nothing.
6) NFL for allowing "icing" the kicker by calling a timeout AFTER the play happens.
7) McNabb for airing it out twice when we needed 3-4 yards.
-- once at end to Moss, where running it could have made it a 46-47 yard FG
-- once in 4th quarter to Galloway, when we just needed a 1st down

8) Myself -- for actually believing we had finally put it all together.

Still, I think this was one of the first recent losses that I felt somewhat okay afterwards. Because compared to our 9-7 losses where we really sucked, this one - I felt like we actually played well.

Did we have any Pass Interference penalties? If not, I consider that a problem with them torching us for 500 yards........

Clinton Portis: You scored 2 touchdowns, but as Matty alluded to Jamaal Brown's jump offsides call, if Portis didn't trip over his own feet on 2nd down and get the first down or get in the endzone again then its over we win. I don't know if you guys remember the play before the offsides but Portis had a nice lane and just had to keep his feet under him to have been able to get the first down. AND a faster back would have scored on the play. There was plenty of room over there for him to get to the EZ.

In todays NFL turnovers and sacks are starting to serve as identifiers for the leagues best defenses. Besides it's only 2 games and one of them was against what I'm not afraid to call the NFL's best offense.

We really should get used to it. We'll be lucky to be in the top 15 of the traditional defensive rankings. The style is now feast or famine. We're either going to destroy teams with our defense or we're going to struggle. What happens will differ on a week to week basis.

Yep, also look at points allowed per game, thats the indicator I look at with most significance when determining a good defense.

To your point of turnovers and sacks...look at the Saints last year. Bottom third of league in yards allowed, but near the lead, if not led, the nfl in turnovers. I would easily call the Saints one of the better defenses in the league last year.

Couldn't agree more. I was actually going to include fans who are bitching about aggressive D in the smackdown. People complained last year about no turnovers and sacks but really low yardage. Now our philosophy is the complete opposite and the same people complain.

Ouch.... did not know that. Is that passing yards or just yards allowed per game?

I know we aren't last in all categories.

Re: Plenty of blame to go around, time to lay some smack down!

On the flip side we are 7th in the league in passing yards and passing yards per game. Right behind the Texans who are 6th, and in most other categories other than passing we are 14th.

We are mddle of the road in most of the defensive categories. Including points allowed.

In contrast to us in our defensive stats the Cowboys who are 0-2 are in the top 5 in total offense. But in the bottom half in points scored.

So I am not going to put to much in the numbers game.

WE all have to remember that this is week 2 for a completely new defensive scheme. The Packers struggled early last year with their switch to the 3-4, but by the end of the year they were 11-5 and one of the better defenses in the NFL.

Yea our D will play very good at times and bad at others.. Next week I wouldn't be shocked if the Rams only scored once.

I would be shocked if the Rams scored. It's going to be one of those bittersweet wins. The type where you're happy to get a win but at the same time you're disappointed that you don't really get much of a feel for where you're at as a football team. Sort of like when we destroyed the Bills during preseason. I just hope we can kill Philly in two weeks. I would take extra pleasure in exposing Vick as a "passer."
