I'd have to assume it'd be expensive, thus giving reason to draft and sign an extension.

alot cheaper than using the franchise tag. still, i cant remember a good QB ever playing a season under the tag.

Michael Vick last year. Peyton Manning had one but didn't play last year.

They tried to tag Brees this year.

Cassel in 2009.

The franchise tag was actually designed specifically for QBs, but now teams use it for any positional player they want to trap for a year without a long-term deal. It's good, guaranteed money for the player but very high risk if they get hurt while tagged. No risk for the team other than a year of cash.

I didnt say players who were tagged - i said good QBs who actually played under the tag. Vick, Brees, and Cassel both got new deals without actually playing under the tag. My point was that teams always seem to workout a long-term deal with a franchise quarterback before the season starts.

Re: RGIII Ready to Report (Signs Deal)

And I'm sure the same thing would happen with RG3. If he's real deal he'll likely have a new contract after year 3.

Agreed...We're not known as a thrifty team that tries to put the screws to its players. As everyone loves to point out we constantly shell out money to get players and keep them happy. The last time we tried to make a big-time budget decision (Pierce) we got killed by fans and media for letting a guy go.

Awesome picture but what exactly was going on, a full-pads long jump contest?

For sure.

Also I agree 100% if RGIII is who we all hope he will be he will get a long term deal after or before year 3.

Re: RGIII Ready to Report (Signs Deal)

So he gets to keep all of his money in event he's cut. Then will get the full amount he signs with from the next team (with the same type of contract).

Not bad.

Re: RGIII Ready to Report (Signs Deal)

There is almost an incentive to try and play terrible just to get cut so you can go to the team you want, get a short year deal (play really well to get an extension), and double dip with the money from the team that drafted you.
