Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
It's also worth noting that the NFL is the last of the three major professional sports to hire minorities in head positions. Taking that a step further, the Washington Redskins were the last NFL franchise to hire a black player. In fact, George Preston Marshall openly talked about his distaste for black athletes until he brought Bobby Mitchell to D.C. of course.
So the Rooney Rule has direct links to then Redskins owner George P. Marshall openly protesting against having black players on his roster. Rooney, in opposition then and now, saw it fit to institute a rule to level the playing field so to speak. |

Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
I had a nice paragraph going defending african americans and this BS rule, but I was sure someone would misread it.
On a side note though I get sick and tired of everything being about race. The Skins did a BS interview and everyone is all upset but had they had an african american HC in waiting like Shanahan... it's ok cause the Skins "actually" fulfilled the Rooney Rule then. A lot of you wanted Gray to be the next HC, so it tells me he was a qualified candidate. Was it fair to Zorn that someone on his coaching staff got interviewed? No. Was it fair for Gray to be considered for the job while working for someone else who is still on the team? No. What we don't know is what is going on behind the scene's. Has Zorn already been told he's not being retained? Was he approached about the team interviewing Gray? Most coach's would not go behind a coach who is above them and interview for their job. Most coach's would say take me out of the interview process. I'd like to think that if Gray actually was a part of a full interview then Zorn gave his blessing knowing he was not gunna be here and why hinder someone else from moving up in the coaching ranks. But no matter how it went down DS tried to get Shanahan back in 2003 or something like that. Plus they are good friends and have talked on a regular basis since then. In other words they are friends. They like each other. They get a long. Which means even some white candidates who are qualified are not getting a chance to be interviewed cause DS basically turned to a qualified friend and asked if he would take over. He was most likely told not till the end of the season. The Skins interview process was simply to fulfill a rule so they don't get into trouble. |

Regardless, we have satisfied the Rooney Rule, and I simply want Zorn gone, along with the clear understanding that a new staff is coming in. NO lingering coaches (hixon, blache, etc) please.

Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
I'm with you, but I could live with the defensive side staying the same if it had to. Hixon's gotta go. It made my Christmas that Vinny stepped down. When Zorn is gone my New Year will have been made. I pray Shanny does not see something he likes in Hixon and tells him his services are no longer needed and then... my Millenium will be made.

Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
Back on topic.... are there any new rumors in regards to Shanny?
Last I heard was he and Slowick have been working out of an office in Denver trying to put together their coaching staff. Supposedly they have been interested in the 3-4 defense or a hybrid and have been studying how the Steelers are using the 3-4 and the Patriots. Rumor was they were interested in Zimmer or have contacted him in regards to being apart of the team. *** All rumors of course*** Any of you behind the scene's people have inside info or anything new. Info was coming out like something every week but now have seemed to dry up. Atleast for me. |

I can't wait until Zorn is gone. If you ask me he's just as bad or worse then the Old Ball coach. I hope that Shanahan is really coming here.

Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
I've got a friend that works with the league on the business side who is a HUGE Raiders fan and knows more about football than almost anyone else I know. I asked him for a scouting report on Shanahallen.
He e-mailed me this morning with the following: I loved Bruce Allen..... did a great job with the draft as well as signing free agents. Also a big plus.... knows how to work the cap. From what I remember the Raiders always seemed to be on the brink of going over, but he would get them under while still signing quality free agents. As for Shanahan he is obviously a great offensive mind. He likes a mobile qb and loves to have a several running backs at his disposal. The one concern I have is his defenses were pretty bad the last few years in Denver.....they tried a lot of different defensive coordinators and personal, but nothing seemed to work. Overall if you do hire him I think its going to be a good move. He's well respected, has the rings, and is a proven winner. Nothing groundbreaking although I was pleasantly surprised to read his assessment of Allen being so positive. I don't think the defensive issues that Shanny had in Denver will necessarily replicate here because we've got a solid core on that side of the ball..
