Briscoe was absolutely terrible last year. He had the drops all season. One of the UDFAs is an upgrade over that guy.
I am still shocked he even has a roster spot.

New advance scout-Larry Coyer. The same guy who was Shanny's DC in Denver

And to answer your question, if Garçon goes down, (and he did last year) Briscoe still didn't 'play' other than serve as a decoy. You guys are liking Royal to a stud fantasy player but, the truth is he's no better than Moss, Garçon, or Morgan given the same opportunities. |

If you have the opportunity to upgrade the team without a huge salary cap hit, then you do it. This all may be a mute point anyways since there is a chance we keep 4 TE's this year. Meaning Briscoe may already be replaced by Jordan Reed. |

Re: Official Redskins Off-Season News & Rumors-Part Trois
People didn't mention this already, but Chris Russell of ESPN980 was watching practice and said/tweeted:
#Redskins observations from OTA's : Niles Paul blew past rookie safety Phillip Thomas on what looked to be a wheel route for a long gain/TD. #Redskins observations from OTA's : Glimpse of the (near?) future - Several times, saw Amerson at RCB, Thomas/Rambo at S, R. Crawford @ LCB. #Redskins observations from OTA's : A few times saw #Redskins use this alignment in nickel. DHall at LCB, Crawford at RCB w/ EJ Biggers-slot #Redskins observations from OTA's - Rookies David Amerson and Bacarri Rambo each had a INT against Rex Grossman. Rambo was at FS for his. #Redskins observations from OTA's : After throwing two straight picks, Rex dialed up a long ball to Aldrick Robinson beating Amerson/Gomes. #Redskins observations from OTA's - RB Jawan Jamison had a nice "2nd level wiggle" on 1 run (@John_Keim) & did nice job in pass pro mirror. ------ So what I gather from that (of course its way to early to start coming to conclusions) - Amerson is looking just like he did in college: great coverage one play, beat the next. - Phillip Thomas is getting burned by Niles Paul. Not helping his case with me saying he doesn't have the speed to play in the NFL. - Rambo looking like a good/great pick (as a lot of us had thought and hoped) - Skins are using Biggers at the Slot, although I read (I think in PFF) that he is a lot better outside than in the slot. Interesting. - Jawan Jamison getting attention already. I can think back to this time last year and Chris Russell was saying noticeable things about a guy named Alfred Morris.. I could easily see him & Thompson both on the roster and Royster and Helu gone.

Hopefully I can look back at this in a month and say "Yeah he really improved" and not "well, kind of saw this coming"

I think the first hand twitter observations were cool. thanks for posting those. I doubt you can draw any conclusions or speculations though, because this early on coaches are going to be shuffling combinations just to have tape to review, and being that the rookies are hardly out of college it would be odd to me if there college strengths and weaknesses weren't highlighted so coaches can show and coach these guys. its not like just putting on an nfl uniform suddenly makes players change there tendencies.

Re: Official Redskins Off-Season News & Rumors-Part Trois
To the Niles Paul blowing past Philip Thomas statement. Sounds more like Thomas misread the play. Paul runs a 4.5, Thomas runs in the 4.6-4.7 range. Sounds like he expected a short pattern and planted his feet. If it happens all the time, I see the point. But once in OTA's isnt exactly the end of his career.
Troy Polamalu does not have very good top end speed. He just understands angles and has the instincts to be moving in the right direction before he should be. The best safeties arent necessarily the fastest ones, its the ones who have the best instincts. Even Troy and Ed Reed have been burned before. |

Re: Official Redskins Off-Season News & Rumors-Part Trois
Agreed. The safety can be 15-20 yards back from scrimmage. The 4.5 receiver runs 20 yards forward, and safety runs 5-10-15 to meet the receiver (with good angles). They still need speed, but they're not starting from the same point on the field -- so angles / instincts are more important.
