I think its strange about the media hype that followed Tebow. I mean all he was - was a qb that didnt pan out. All that hype just because of his tebowing pose. Stupid.

The media isn't passive. If the show doesn't have enough conflict or controversy to keep the viewer's interest, then the Oprah producers will create it in some way. They may draw a controversial comment out of Sam or they may do a little creative editing. The show has got to be about something.

Everything Oprah touches turns to gold.

Michael Sam would be a fool not to capitalize on the Oprah documentary. He will probably be irrelevant in 3 years so make your money while you can.

Sure, the documentary will be good for Sam and Oprah and, possibly, it will even be good for the NFL. It's not as likely to be good for the Rams organization and it certainly wouldn't be good for any player, coach, or staff member who might be portrayed as a bigot or villain in the documentary.

Yea and if he gets cut he knows why. He is taking a chance trying to make his money now because he knows he might not have a job at the beginning of this season. That is almost every single NFL player's goal, make as much money as you can, especially a player in Sam's position.

You may be right, but I do think Oprah tends to focus on the positives of success. Most likely the bigot/villains that are used as the backdrop will be -in no specific order- personal demons Sam overcame, childhood bullies, society at large pressure. Any portrayal of specific current coach/player/staff in a vilifying manner would open the show up to slander, and again, it's not my understanding of Oprah's style. And no I don't have her channel on speed dial

^ I'm guessing this show would be a puff piece more or less. The NFL isn't going to let someone show them in a bad light.

Bingo , and it's why he won't get cut . The Rams will carry him just for the sake of the NFL ,look at how many "new fans" he'll bring to the league this year and not even play .All I can say is that when it's the final cut day and he stays and someone else who can play is cut ,he can thank oprah and the NFL .

Is it possible that Sam is worthy of a roster spot? Dude was pretty damn good at the last level. Gay or not he was getting drafted, and if it weren't for his announcement and the media circus every GM saw coming, he might have gotten drafted earlier.

That explains the Tebow comparison .

The media didnt make Tebow a better football player or a worse one. He is what he is. It isnt going to make Sam better or worse either. Tebow got drafted because of his success in college. He obviously did not pan out. Sam might never be an all pro, or maybe he will. He might be a career backup, and he might be cut before he ever sniffs the field. Who knows? I think the comparison with Tebow is dumb.

Michael Sam's career faces real danger: The Tim Tebow Effect - CBSSports.com

Actually I'm with Giant. The thing is with both Tebow and Sam is that they draw the attention of the type of non-football types that just have an extremely limited understanding of how the NFL works.

So when Tebow was cut by the Jets, to the untrained layman it was because they 'didn't agree with his Christian values and blah blah blah. Look how many games he won.' Never mind he had God awful numbers and a most generous schedule. After all the Broncos won their division at 8-8. Not to mention a throwing motion that made Byron Leftwich look like Favre in terms of release. And in the end even though teams would have been more then willing to give a guy with a work ethic and positive locker room influence like Tebow a shot the attention that comes with a guy who really should be a third string QB is just such an unwelcome distraction. It wasn't Tebow's Christianity that led him out of the league, it was his fanatical followers. Granted Tebows instance on only playing QB didn't help either (see Eric Crouch)

So going forward if anything happens to Sam many untrained laymans will automatically assume, oh The Rams or any other team is anti-gay. No, the guy is a 7th round pick. Even though he was productive in college he doesn't have the physical skill set that makes him a lock for the roster. The good news is though as a DE if he does make the team he can be rotated, unlike QB where if hes taken out for even a single play you end up with a media controversy (See McNabb fitness).

I really hope Sam is successful and I applaud the Rams for drafting him. The problem though is, just like Tebow, we're going to end up with a lot of non-football types making declarations and accusations if he hits a snag before age 34. And maybe not even old age will save Sam from a controversy.
