Re: Why We Shouldn't Go Crazy in Free Agency

At least we can "go" anywhere! Without a CBA, it was "who do we cut?" Now we can at least take a look. Rest assured, Gibbs and Co. will choose carefully. But Gibbs himself has said several times: "we are an agressive franchise." He cited Griffen, Daniels, Washington, Rabach, etc. as evidence that good things can happen in FA if you do it right.

Dana Stublefield, Mark Carrier, Deon= crazy

Marcus Washington, Cornelius Griffen, Casey Rabach= agressive within reason.

We are going to be active, at least.

He starts high school this football this fall and he loves the game. What is nice is having a man like Gibbs running the show because he will do what the Redskins need and will leave this team better off when he leaves!

I'll grant you two of the three. But why does everyone hate on us about Stubblefield? The guy was a beast immediately before joing the Skins. There was no way anyone would have predicted he would suck so hard.

Stubby really benefited from playing alongside Bryant Young back then, and there rumors that he was overrated. Turns out those rumors were most definitely correct.

I think this thread was meant to try and temper our exuberance over the new deal and the all the shiny new free agents it would allow us to get. Notice it was started after the new CBA was accepted.

Well put and true! Young was the man and that was why the 9ers let Stubby move on! That move and the DT out of Carolina ??? we pick up for picks didn't work out the way we hoped it would!

DT out of carolina? You mean Gilbert who ended up not playing and getting us a first rounder?

I'll tell you what though. I worked with Stub a few times in a previous job. Such a nice guy. Unbelievably friendly, and a beast with the BBQ. Frustrating to watch on the field, but great, great guy off it...

The Post didn't reveal anything new about Gibbs' intentions re: free agency. He has been saying for months that the Redskins would be "aggressive" in free agency if the CBA got extended. Redskins.com has even been reporting that the Redskins were possibly looking to upgrade at WR, CB, DE and along the O-line (for depth). So, from my perspective, it's not the WP article changes anything.

As I said earlier in this and other threads, I think we'll probably add 1-3 starting-caliber players and some depth. That wouldn't unreasonable or crazy; that would be what we all have expected and the norm for an offseason. I, and I think others, would be highly surprised if Gibbs added 5+ starters.

What I was saying would be crazy, would be to go after a bunch of big-name players who are going to command 8-figure bonuses. I would be surprised if we got two players with 8-figure bonuses.

Re: Why We Shouldn't Go Crazy in Free Agency

If we do get a kicker I sure as hell hope he can kick a touchback! I like Hall on fieldgoals but did anybody else notice that he kicked off to the 20 yard line? Our opponent's avg field position had to be the 35 yd line. Gibbs won't stand for that.

I think Joe J. would be a good #2 and probably won't cost much. I guarentee somebody is going to overpay for Randel El and I hope it is not us!

I couldn't agree more about not going crazy (as a matter of fact I was just saying so in another thread before I notice this one) another off season like last year will suit me fine.

I disagree. They pulled in several big names Gibbs' first year and that paid off.
They were muted last year and made some moves so they could be more aggressive this year.

DE, LB, WR, K, CB, OL... These are all areas of need and they could all be filled in the first 36 hours. The teams in the East are already getting better and since they can't draft anyone decent after the third round, free agency is the only way to keep up.

Re: Why We Shouldn't Go Crazy in Free Agency

I believe this year is going to resemble one of the big spending years. There are alot of needs at key positions and Joe isn't going to use the draft to fill those immediately. FA pickups will be WR,CB,SS,QB,DE,OLB. They may draft these positions, but not with the intention of playing right away. Also K and P. No way hall is back, plus Tupa has a bad back and they aren't going to keep him around to see if he is going to play or not. Face it, this may be Joes last year on the sideline and we are going to do what ever he thinks can get him back to big one. I am not saying his last year with the Redskins, just his last on the sideline. I mean, hell GW handles the D with no input or very little input from Gibbs, admitably. and now Saunders is going to do the same with the O. Now, Joe may decide on going for it on 4th down, or go for two, but other than that he isn't going to be doing much. hell, saunders is even calling the plays. We will spend and spend heavily!!
