He's tough, he works his tail off, he's never been a problem in any way, he has the versatility to play end or tackle, and is a solid run stopper. All that said, he's simply not a great or even very good player. I'd say he's teetering on the line of great backup/average starter.

Re: Demetric Evans ....start me or lose me
We could probably gauge the "This is Vinnys ship now" by this move alone. I say if he elects to let Evens walk in favor of keeping a 36 year old Daniels, then its the same old same old. And this decision can be projected throughout the entire FA/Draft/Cut process. IMO

Re: Demetric Evans ....start me or lose me
This is all straight from the Rosenhaus playbook. Get the media involved, throw out a veiled (or outright) threat, generate a buzz, leading to a bigger contract.
Signing Evans is a key priority. He's versatile and solid. BHA is probably right on with the $$$ about $ 1.5M or so per year, 4 yr. deal. Once Evans is signed, either Taylor or Daniels can be released. Probably Daniels due to injury issues and the fact that he can't switch to LB like JT. The FO will hold Taylor pending what happens in the draft or if a better FA LB is signed. Bottom line, unless Raji slips, any DL upgrade waits until next year.

But letting Evans walk and retaining Taylor and/or Daniels now would be completely inexcuseable. Like you indicated, what Cerrato does here will show us whether he is really trying to build for the future or if he's stuck in the same "win now" mentality that has plagued our franchise for years.

Re: Demetric Evans ....start me or lose me
when daniels went down i will never ever understand why evans wasn't handed the job. i like evans, he's been a solid player for us for a while now. the problem is he really isn't a difference maker. i say keep him. he deserves a chance to be the starter and he deserves a raise.

Re: Demetric Evans ....start me or lose me
Pay him what he is worth. A solid backup DLineman who can spot start at DE and DT and play adequately to decent. He isn't a starter talent and he will get no opportunities to be an outright starter anywhere else in the league. At least I'd be shocked if he did. But as far as depth on the line he is a perfect example of someone we'd need to keep.

Is it just me or does the thread title sound like it could be the title of an R&B song.

Re: Demetric Evans ....start me or lose me
I was pretty vocal about letting Evans handle the role last year in Daniels absence...which did ultimately happen, but not before we threw a second rounder at Jason Taylor.
After seeing a whole year of him, I think we'd be best off not extending his deal. He's really bad against the run when you consider his size. He's a good enough pass rusher to dominate the weaker offensive lineman he goes up against, but he's a total non factor against top competition. Most of his production comes from a handful of games. His versatility is a plus, but we're not at a shortage of DL players, so I wouldn't offer him a contract right now. I'm happy we got to see enough of him to make this judgment though, otherwise, we would have just been guessing in the dark about his future right now. We could do worse at LE than him, but I'd take one more year of Daniels over Evans. Plus, Taylor is going to line up there in specific packages anyway, so we already don't have an every down end.

Re: Demetric Evans ....start me or lose me
evans = joe salavae; which isnt a bad thing IMO. we need spot starters like evans who have been in this organization awhile.
with evans being 30 i dont blame him for putting the "i want to start" talk out there in hopes of getting one decent pay check from the nfl. honestly, this is probaly the biggest deal he is going to get, his whole life stability and family (if he has one yet) rides on him getting the most he can in a few weeks. id rather see him get a big pay day from some other team then stay with us for less. he served us well and now its time for him to get as much as he can. go skins!!

Re: Demetric Evans ....start me or lose me
So many times I think we expect to have a superstar at every single position. Evans is someone who just like others have said is "solid". If anything I don't mind giving him a short term mediocre deal and have him just be "solid" for another year or two while we look at DE prospects in the draft over those years.
These days I'm just not too concerned with the short term. We have to think about drafting well for OL or DL this year and then going from there with the knowledge that we won't be Super Bowl contenders right away.

Re: Demetric Evans ....start me or lose me
you sign him to a cheap deal, and tell him he'll be the starter but go draft a DE who will end up as a starter
