Re: Week 1 Positives and Negatives

I thought yesterday was a solid effort, but it was a replay of several college games I had gone to, where the one team was dominant, but kept coughing up the ball in the red zone trying to pound it in. The turnovers killed us, but the execution for the most part was pretty good.

Re: Week 1 Positives and Negatives

Helu letting that punt get blocked reminded me of this year's Hard Knocks show. If you guys didn't catch the episode where ATL's ST coach goes nuts on a rookie RB, you need to watch it. "Your not good enough to be an a@@hole!".

The biggest positive from this week is that every other team in the NFC East lost.

Re: Week 1 Positives and Negatives

Positives
Morris looked great and run blocking was good also
I thought RG3 looked good overall
Andre Roberts looks good receiving and returning kicks

Negatives
So many to list where to start
Pass blocking was awful
Special teams awful
Coaching was awful

I just finished watching nfl rewind, out of the 18 rushing plays between Morris and Helu only twice were they stopped for little or no gain, most of the other rushes were for over 5 yards,Gruden should not have gotten away from it.
Gruden needs to step up his game

Actually I'm in favor of getting a kicker who will kick the PAT high enough to clear the line. Watt made a good play but that kick was way low.

Re: Week 1 Positives and Negatives

NC_Skins, that's a nice picture of it. My only question (I really don't know) is that from the screen shots Watt is around Polumbus in 1 second and at Griffin's feet, and Griffin is already in a quick throw motion. If it was a quick pass, where Griffin is just supposed to release it within 3 seconds, and Polumbus didn't hold his block for even that second, does that change your opinion. Obviously, I don't have a hand timer, so only looking at the seconds that have elapsed from shot two to shot 3, but that doesn't really change my question. If the QB expects to drop set throw in 3 seconds, should a RT be able to hold a pocket that long?

Exactly what I was thinking. If it was a quick pass play climbing the pocket makes no sense. If it was a longer developing play ok, of course it makes sense for him to step up.

Looking at the routes being ran, it would appear it was a short pass play.

edit: Just noticed it was shotgun formation. Damn.

I We going to say it was shotgun but you beat me to it.

Anyways beside Polombus having no shot of stopping Watt, why is the RB not helping to double team HIM?

You had the right idea though. Robert needs to climb the pocket more. The one play I remember was the intentional grounding play. He should of stepped up in the pocket instead of running in to JJ Watt, but hindsight is always 20/20.

In that situation, it's more on the QB to avoid the DE by stepping up into the pocket and making the throw. RT/LTs push the edge rushers out and back as far as possible. The interior will solidify the point of attack at the line of scrimmage and this creates that pocket for QBs to work in. It's a small tight window and something I'm sure is hard to perfect.

Re: Week 1 Positives and Negatives

RG3's completion percentage and QB rating are very misleading. His passes werent much more than long handoffs so the stats make it look like his passing had more of an impact on the game than it really did.

I thought the D played well enough to allow the team to win but its going to be difficult to win games when the offense can score.

Re: Week 1 Positives and Negatives

I understand why the coaches didn't give more attention to blocking Watt. The Skins even tried to block Watt with a TE one-on-one, as if that was going to work. When Clowney went out of the game, it should have been a no brainer to double-team Watt.

I was very unimpressed with that entire game plan. From the playcalling, to the lack of attention paid to Watt, 0 designed runs for Griffin. It was Jim Zorn part 2. Oh, and don't get me started on that shitty reverse call deep in our own territory. Hopefully we'll see some improvements next week. Let's get DJax down the field a bit more, let's get RG3 on the move, and for god sakes, coach his ass up and get him to stop BACK-PEDDLING!
