McCartney strongly hinted that their position would start with making Cousins one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the game.

And that right there is what makes this contract a pain in the ass.
The Redskins have to believe that Cousins is a top ten QB.
Cause then hes gonna get feck you Hollywood money.
We did not make the playoffs last year.
I think if we had a real pass rush we would have and then he would look like a top 10.

Make no mistake, they are still quite far apart, but they're going to meet.

My guess, they won't make much progress at the combine. Why? Because they don't have to. The Redskins know that as long as the 49ers don't have a QB, they'll remain a possibility in Kirk's mind. So they'll want to wait that out. The Redskins also know now whether they intend to bring their offers up to a reasonable place, or whether they don't. They're just not telling anybody.

The combine will end and they'll be apart, and we'll hear shit, and we'll all get worried. But all the while the Redskins will know that they plan to increase their offer in July.

Either that, or we'll eventually hear that the Redskins granted Cousins permission to seek a trade. Every action the team has taken thus far has been contrary to that being the case. But I guess it's possible.

Regardless, don't freak out if the progress doesn't come as fast as you'd like. As long as you don't hear that they're actually speaking with other teams or have given Cousins permission to do so, and I mean from a very reputable media source like Schefter or Rap Sheet, then take it as a good thing. It means they continue the dance until July 15 when shit gets real and they all put their cards on the table.

Basically, I think they already know that they're planning on upping their offer eventually, they're just trying to wait the 49ers out and watch them make a move at QB.

Best takeaway from that little sit-down:

We've worked with the personnel department and most recently the coaching staff to identify the guys we think will fit into our locker room and what we do, and if they make it to free agency there's no doubt their phones will be ringing.

Either they trade him, or they lose him next year and only get a 3rd Rd comp pick in 2019. If their demands are bogus, no problem, just wait until next off-season to sign him.

No reason to include the 2nd overall in this. Cousins and the 49ers have more leverage than the Redskins do. We can sweeten the pot slightly so they get more than the 3rd rd comp pick they would get in 2019, but not by much. They can take it or leave it. "

It's interesting to read the different perspectives among other team's fans. The 49er fans really seem to want Kirk Cousins, and feel they're getting him whether it be this year or next year. AND, they feel they can get him for something just a bit more than a ham sandwich.

Yeah, they pretty much feel they can offer a ham sandwich this year and if the 'skins don't take it, they'll just take Cousins next year without giving anything up (besides money of course.)

I'd say if the 'skins were truly open to trade, they should trade with the Patriots for Jimmy G and a couple 2nd round picks just to cool the jets on 49er fans. This, of course, if there was not going to be a long term contract in the works. Otherwise, if San Fran truly wants Cousins, make them pull the trigger this year.
