Re: Breaking News Roy Williams Traded to Dallas
With a decent #2 in Crayton and a very good #3 in Austin--I think this move was overkill for the Boys. Sam Hurd is also a good #2/3 even though he is hurt.
However, I think the Williams pickup is overall a good hedge against T.O.'s eventual decline in skills/age related injury/blowup... |

Maybe........they are anticipating the unnavoidable? The TO meltdown, and are preparing to deal him?

Re: Breaking News Roy Williams Traded to Dallas
Shit.
How the hell is any defense supposed to stop a tandem of T.O. and Roy Williams when you've got guys like Crayton, Austin and Witten still around? We can mock it all we want, but I don't see how you can deny that this creates serious matchup problems for ANY defense. Fortunately Romo and Felix Jones are out on the offensive side for a while, and hopefully Pacman has seen his last snap as a professional.

Williams wanted out of Detroit during preseason, so he got what he wanted and landed in Dallas. Team Chemistry is going to be messed up with Dallas. Roy is Mr Texas so TO better learn to live with fewer balls to catch. Detroit needed this to hopefully start a true rebuilding effort to make the team competitve finally. It also probably means Marinelli is toast after this season. Roy was great for Detroit, but with Kitna out for the year his efforts would have been wasted as the Lions don't have much of a running game to compliment the pass oriented attack. Orlovsky can't cut the mustard in the primary QB role. There is a good bet without Kitna and Williams that the Lions are going 0-16. Even with those guys they might have been able to squeeze out 2-3 wins, so the Detroit FO made the deal once Kitna was placed on IR. What this means for us is that we better have an excellent pass rush come rematch time or we just might be toast. |

As long as they remain healthy, I'm pretty sure Smoot, Rogers, Springs and Landry can handle them. |

Re: Breaking News Roy Williams Traded to Dallas
I know Williams is a talented guy but what has he really done so far in his career? He had one very good season in 2006 and the rest have been nothing to write home about. Good move for them but it's not going to keep me up at night. I think they gave up too much. If the Skins pulled that move Redskins nation would have a collective heart attack. They needed a DB, not another WR.

Re: Breaking News Roy Williams Traded to Dallas
He's a damn good receiver with potential to be great. He's been playing on a god awful team with inconsistent play all around. In '06 Kitna had 4200 yards and 21 tds, and not surprisingly Williams was really solid. His first four seasons totaled 244 catches for 3650 yards and 28 TDs. On the Lions. The Lions.
I could see him being very productive in Dallas, but with Romo's injury and TO's antics, it may be a while till we see big numbers from him. I also think Dallas gave up too much. But a smart move for Detroit. They have Calvin Johnson, and now the potential to have 5 of the top 100 picks next year. They keep a franchise WR and significantly improve their draft each of the next two years. And with Millen no longer pulling the strings they may actually find some talent.

Re: Breaking News Roy Williams Traded to Dallas
I think Roy Williams is a great individual talent. No one is doubting that. But Williams seems to be -- I say seems to be because I haven't watched him play all that often -- an up and down player and he's only had one thousand yard season as a pro.
Williams isn't known for having Santana moments. Where he completely destroys a team, like Dallas, and wins the game by himself. |

Re: Breaking News Roy Williams Traded to Dallas
The good news for Detroit fans is they got a helluva lot for Williams. The bad news for Detroit fans is that the Lions will draft another wide receiver with their first pick and then justify it.

Without Millen around they may actually change their ways. Maybe.

Re: Breaking News Roy Williams Traded to Dallas
Isn't it amazing that out of those 4 guys they took (Charles Rogers, Roy Williams, Mike Williams, and Calvin Johnson) only one is still standing? What a joke.

Re: Breaking News Roy Williams Traded to Dallas
Rogers and M.Williams were awful. R.Williams and C.Johnson are pro-bowl talent. Great picks talent-wise, the Lions just suck at addressing needs.

Re: Breaking News Roy Williams Traded to Dallas
This is actually a pretty good move for the Cowboys. They essentially gave up a first (remember, extra 3rd n 6th means it pretty much leaves them with their original draft picks) for a guy who can come in and make their offense that much better. Roy Williams is a Pro Bowl talent and we've all seen what having two Pro Bowl wideouts can do for your offense (Harrison and Wayne in the glory days in Indy, Boldin and Fitzgerald in Arizona) so this will make Dallas' offense that much better, especially when Romo gets back. Jerry made this move because in all seriousness that offense was going to be lacking with Hurd gone for the season, Romo gone for a month, and Jones out for two weeks. This move pretty much vaults them up the pack again to SB contenders.
Not to mention Detroit gets an extra first rounder next year that they can help to use with their rebuilding effort (I figure Marinelli won't last beyond this year at the rate he's going, and they will hire a new GM/coach after this season.
