Tom Cruise? Gibbs was a no-brainer hire at the time, and he'd be a no-brainer hire in this situation. Plus, it's something Snyder can't screw up, which is valuable.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
I can only dream of Joe coming back to DC to run this organization! I hope there is some credibility to this rumor.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
Yeah unless he just brings in the GM and head coach and lets them take over everything while he has basically a figurehead/occasional consultant role with the title of President.
I can see it now. President Joe Gibbs, GM Doug Williams, Assistant GM Lionel Vital, Head Coach Russ Grimm, Defensive Coordinator Todd Bowles, Offensive Coordinator (insert name that I can't think of right now) A part of me suspects though this is a story planted by the Redskins themselves to get fans, if only temporarily, a bit excited in the midst of all this negative news

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
Given Joe's other commitments, I seriously doubt he is coming back in any type of full time role. My hope, however, is that DS's dinner w/ Joe went something like this:
DS: Joe, my front office is a shambles - I trusted Vinny and he just doesn't have it. I need to assemble a new management team. Will you help me do that? JG: Dan, I would like to help but I can't run the team for you. If you want, I will help you assemble a solid managment team including someone to be the final arbiter of football decisions. DS: Okay Joe, that works for me.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
If true I don't see how this could be a bad thing? Gibbs has said in the past that he would like a front office type of job and get away from the mundane part of everyday coaching. Gibbs is a respected person throughout football who might be able to bring certain people to the table ie; GM or HCing candidates that otherwise might not be available if we kept Cerrato or if DS tried to go out and locate someone himself.
I think he might do a good job at locating a GM to run things and between Gibbs and whoever is GM I think they both would most likely find a decent HC. None of this has anything to do with what "scheme" we are going to run. Most teams use similar plays anyway no matter what the scheme, they just use different terminology. Plus I would not have a doubt that Gibbs would not have good HCing candidates in mind no matter what scheme they use. |

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
Gibbs isn't a good talent evaluator anymore, this game has passed him, bring in chris polian, Bill's son and build a team all through the draft, and not free agency and trading draft picks. If Gibbs comes in he should be the team chaplian. He is a better talent evaluator than Vinny though

And as far as him better than Vinny, that's not saying much. We don't need someone a little bit better than Vinny. We need a bonafide, kickass, successful GM. Anything short of that, ain't cutting it. |

Well, we all do want an elite playoff team year in and year out. And true, in Gibbs I, Bobby Beathard was mostly responsible for finding the right players, as he should have been considering he was the GM. However, I am also applying what Gibbs has done in NASCAR to build championship racing teams. I am speaking on the premise of Gibbs being responsible for finding that GM, which I believe he has the smarts to find that perfect guy for that position, and I also believe someone like Joe Gibbs could find the right coach for us. After all, Joe Gibbs does know a thing or two about coaching in the NFL. And, Joe Gibbs knows a thing or two about being a Super Bowl Champion coach in the NFL. What does Vinny know about picking Head coaches? Apparently, not a lot! It has already been proven that Snyder and Vinny suck as choosing GMs and coaches, why not give someone who has been successful in the NFL a chance to make those choices? It is unfair to say Gibbs doesn't know anything about choosing head coaches or GMs. He hasn't been given the opportunity to do so yet. Let's not tunnel vision solely on player choice during his second stint. I think he also made some right choices during his time here as well.

Now, lets change this story around. Gibbs takes the President of operations job and he calls Chris Polian and lets him know DS is interested in him taking over the team and fixing this mess and that only he(Gibbs) the new GM and new HC would be making all football decisions with out DS.....I have to imagine it would be a more interesting job then simply knowing he was going to the Skins with status quo. Matter of fact I imagine more prospects would be made available when hearing that DS is trying a hands off approach, but willing to spend the money. |

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
I doubt Snyder and VC has been consulting with Gibbs all this time. Gibbs has been mostly centered around his racing team. They just happened to meet for dinner in Charlotte, NC when the 'skins were in town against the Panthers.
